Good dimmer switch for dimmable LEDs
These dimmer switches work perfectly both with an individual 9W classic shape LED bulb and a bank of recessed ceiling LED bulbs (GU10 5W). Most modern dimmable LED bulbs work best with trailing-edge dimming which this dimmer uses out-of-the-box. Leading-edge operation can be set by programming the dimmer (instructions are included and can also be found on the varilight website if you lose them!), as can the minimum dim level if you want or need to increase that for some reason. There is some confusion about the rating of these dimmers and I had to double-check on the Varilight website before ordering to be sure.If used with halogen bulbs, the rating is min. 10W, max. 300W.If used with dimmable LEDs, due to the circuitry in the bulbs themselves, the rating is 1 - 10 bulbs (maximum 120W) - the 10W min. rating given for halogens doesn't apply directly to LEDs because of the way the circuitry in the bulbs themselves typically works. The dimmer works fine with a single LED bulb <10W, but your mileage may vary depending on the quality/type of bulb.I am using them successfully with Amazon Basics dimmable 9W bulbs (ASIN:B01GRYJQSE), Lumin Tecko Dimmable 3.5W GU10 bulbs (ASIN:B01M64FHKP) and Allcam dimmable 5W GU10 bulbs (ASIN:B0187HS6XU).

Very good quality
We recently had an electrician put power to our summer house. Unfortunately, he wasn't the brightest spark and installed an old cheap dimmer switch that wasn't compatible with LED bulbs. I would assume that most people these days are either using LED bulbs or are considering switching over to them. So as you can imagine, we weren't best pleased that our wall lights were emitting a very loud buzzing noise when in use.I had previously purchased this switch and installed it in a room in our house so was more than happy to purchase the same one again. It's very well made and also very easy to install. You can read the instructions or just remember which wires went where when you disconnected the previous switch. So now we are happily sitting in silence in our summer house!Would definitely recommend.

Has problems
First, this has a ‘soft start’ characteristic, it takes a good second or so to come on to ‘set’ brightness. if you enter the room as you switch on, the room will be dark for the first second, be warned if you just ‘pop’ into a room to do something quickly...Secondly, This has a ‘programmable’ mode. For functions related to maximum brightness etc. Quite clever I guess, however, I have never felt the need to adjust this, ‘factory default’ settings was perfect for me.Sadly, this switch started off really good, however, every once in a while it will go into programming mode for no apparent reason.I can cope with the soft start, however, what I can’t cope with is the lights dimming and going bright once I have been in the room for 30 seconds (as it slips into programming mode by itself). Just. Thought these things would be helpful to know before you bought.

This LED dimmer ain't dim
If you are replacing tungsten or halogen lamps with dimmable LEDs, you'll also have to replace your dimmer switch. This switch is a straight same-size replacement for your old white dimmer, wires up in the same way, so switch off at the mains and in a few minutes the job is done. But there's more. LED lamps are not all the same. The Varilight works in three modes, and you can try which one gives the smoothest, flicker-free dimming for the make of LED lamps you own, if the pre-set mode is not good enough. Also, you can change the minimum level of dimming, which you will probably have to do as the amount of dimming you get will depend on the make of lamp. Precise instructions for doing this by a sequence of clicks and twists come with the switch, and you make the adjustments after the switch and all your lamps are installed. There is a slight quirk that this switch has -- your lamps will no longer be "instant-on". There is a momentary delay after you press the switch, then the lamps brighten up in about a second. Similarly, there is a small lag when you rotate the dimmer, so it is best to twist it slowly.I've got two of these switches, and am very pleased with them, especially as they don't get hot and buzz the way my old dimmers used to do.

These handle LED dimmables, their other models don't!
I originally purchased a couple of the Varilight dimmer switches, wired them in and put in dimmable LED bulbs, expecting to have an easy time at home, but they flickered to hell, so much so that we ended up not using the main lights as they were just TERRIBLE - they got nicknamed as "disco lights".After a bit of research I found out that (for some INSANE reason) they make different models, and all for the same price, but some are just plain worse than others, even though they should do the same thing, and the only difference is a tiny bit on the version number, looking exactly the same, packaged exactly the same, and installed exactly the same, so be VERY careful about which one you buy - make sure it's THIS one and not one of the MUCH WORSE ones!!!
