A very nice mattress, but a few caveats: It might be a bit wider than your couch's old spring mattress. Or maybe it's that foam bulges more than an innerspring when flexed. With a waterproof cover and sheets on it, I have to be more careful that they don't get caught in the mechanism when opening or closing. My couch has a fabric pad (canvas sheet) supporting the cushions, and when the bed is open, it supports the lower third of the mattress (your knees and feet). So I don't feel the bar at the 1/3 point much to begin with. But I feel it less -- just a tiny bit if I focus on it -- than I did with the old mattress. This has a velour-like cover that zips to be fully removed. However, the attached tag says that both the mattress and the foam should be "spot-cleaned" only -- no washer or dryer. As for sinking in or heat, my place is air conditioned and I'm reasonably slim, so no complaints there. I have a thin waterproof-fabric/fill pad on it, which might also regulate heat a bit? As an occasional side-sleeper, I sink just enough and don't bottom out. My only complaint is that it's made in China. I had planned to buy a second, similar one (that one made in the US) to use as a topper on my own bed, but then realized that a full-size mattress is 3 inches longer than this sofabed mattress. If one of them made a 75-inch version, I'd buy it in a minute. This one I suppose, because it's gel. Just the same, I put the old mattress back in the sofabed for awhile and tried sleeping on this, as a topper for an inexpensive, fairly firm innnerspring mattress, all on a box spring firmed up with some boards. The result is great, if a bit jiggly overall. And apparently it's not so odd an idea -- the bottom of the cover has non-slip beads, which makes sense for use on a mattress, no sense for use on raw sofabed springs. (Maybe other sofabeds have fabric? Or this is marketed elsewhere as a topper?) Unfortunately, Classic Brands doesn't state the actual specs of the foams in this and has not responded, so I have no idea how to replicate the results with another product that's meant to be a topper. Anyway, my house guest mentioned that the mattress was very comfortable when used as intended -- in the sofa.

This mattress arrived quickly and was well packaged. It fit our 30 year old sofa bed perfectly. We noticed only a faint odor to the foam and as we had planned to air it for a few weeks before using it, there was no problem. It expanded to the measurements as described and came with a good quality cover. It improved the overall comfort of the seating by increasing support for the recently replaced seat cushions. Hoping to get a few years out of it as it will only get only occasional use!

Other reviewers complained about smell, while some reviewers said that there was none. The product's instruction guide says there will be a modest smell that will bother someone with acute smelling ability, and this seems like a fair and accurate description to me (it's not just "new" smell like with a new car...but something less appealing for sure). We let the product air out for several days, with me rolling and sitting on it to help the foam cells release and take in new air, and it still has a slight "new" smell to it that is obviously diminishing over time... and it probably would have done so faster if we had opened it in a room with more air flow as the directions suggest (the mattress is way lighter--30 some pounds--than a regular depth, full-size matress and it can be folded more or less in half so I should have aired it out in the garage). With a mattress pad and nice smelling, clean sheets, I wouldn't think twice about letting a guest (or me) sleep on this if it's had just a few days to air out, but I wouldn't have wanted to sleep on it myself for the first couple of nights after delivery. Regarding mattress size, it is *exactly* what the specifications say it is supposed to be and had poofed out to full size (including being 4.5" wide) within 24 hours despite the room being cool (instructions say it can take longer in cold conditions, but that wasn't the case). Given the comments of some of the older reviews, I am wondering if the company increased the box size at some point so that the mattress isn't so compressed initially. Finally, regarding comfort, it's great. We have a new sofa sleeper, and we decided to replace the mattress before anyone slept on it as it was less comfortable than a fancy, full-size air mattress that we've used for some guests in the past. The foam mattress is a huge step up, and it had the bonus effect of making the new couch firmer, which is something we would have had to pay extra for. Besides having a nice bonus guest bed, we're going to have a couch that lasts a lot longer than would be the case with a traditional couch where the support springs stretch over time. Other reviewers said you can still feel the bars. Even though I weigh in at about 215 lbs, I can't unless I am purposefully digging in with my weight over the top of them. I could happily sleep on this mattress every night, and it is more comfortable than the traditional mattress we have on our bed.

The mattress never expanded to 4.5 inches. I think it was just short of 4 inches after being left out flat for 3 days. I used it anyway and have been using it in a hide-a-bed for 7 months. It's more comfortable than the mattress that came with the bed, however that is a low bar. I can still feel the bar from the bed through the mattress though. I think I may just by a mattress foam topper and see if that does the trick.

I see a lot of other people here use it as a topper. That’s something I was not interested in as depending on the size of your sleeper that’s not convenient. Mine is a full and even so I am not lugging that thing up and down stairs. I was thankfully pleasantly surprised. Just for reference I have the Diane couch from Raymour Flannigan and I cannot feel the bar and found it comfortable. My husband who is 190lbs knew it was there but couldn’t feel it in any uncomfortable way if that makes sense. I love it. If your 300lbs might be an issue, the extra weight will no doubt make that bar more noticible, but 200 seems to be fine. Will you wake up with back pain? I mean I’m not sure yet, I’ll try it and get back to you, but if it does I wouldn’t be surprised. It’s a pull out couch they are not meant to be a bed. It’s for here and there use, they have no support. The mattress itself is medium firmness with a plush feeling to it. I was worried it wouldn’t be thick enough but it really is great!
