Great idea, if it works
Maybe I got a bad unit, but no matter what I did, I couldn't get this thing to get an IP address. I tried four different routers with no luck. Unfortunately there's absolutely no way to communicate with this unless it's on a network, so if it doesn't work right out of the box, you'll never get it to work.

Not for a non-technical person
Not bad for gear that is 10+ years old. It was not a simple install, but it has been rock solid since I got it set up. I hooked it up to my USB printer, and plugged it into my switch, and powered it on. I had the scan the network to discover the IP address it had been assigned. That allowed me get to the web portal. The "tricky" part was that the portal the basic index.htm page was broken, so viewing the source of the file showed me where I should go for configuration. From there, I set it up with a static IP. I then reserved that IP on my router. Next was setting up the printer with IP printing to the print server's IP. It works great. It let me continue to use a printer that was working great, but doesn't have more advanced sharing. I also later found a page on iogear's site on manual configuration that would have gotten to the addresses for the configuration pages.

Multi-function capability is glitchy
I purchased two of these units, one for a CoStar label printer, the other for a Canon MP780 multifunction printer. The first IoGear print server was recognized intermittently on my local network, and after spending lots of time determining whether it I was doing something wrong, I plugged in the second unit, which was recognized instantly and reliably. So, lesson number one, as others have written, is that these units can be defective. Next I learned I was able to use it as a print server fairly reliably, both with the CoStar and the Canon. However, I simply have not been able to utilize the IoGear fully, as I can print with it, but not scan or fax. With both scanning and faxing the unit hangs. IoGear tech support said that this problem would be eliminated if I reinstalled print drivers, etc, while the IoGear was active, but that was not the case. So, if one is looking for a USB print server, providing the IoGear unit is not defective, it appears to work. But I am less convinced that this will work to support full multifunction capabilities over a local network.

Wireless Printer Server
Using this server to connect two notebook pcs to an Epson CX3810 multi-function printer-scanner-fax via a Linksys wireless router. Easy installation with some communication issues between one of the two pcs and the printer. Tech Service contacted and they have been very helpful.

More work with wireless network
There should definitely be separate instructions. If the print server is to be used on a wireless network, it must be connected to the wireless router in order for the print server to pick up an IP address in the same range as the wireless devices attempting to print to the server. The print server must be on the same subnet as your computers (wireless or wired). Otherwise the computers will not be able to find the print server.

DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT
I was tempted to buy this product as it was reasonably priced and seemed to support what I needed. After I got this product it did not work - the software could not detect the unit on the network. I troubleshooted the problem with IOGEAR technical support and was told that the unit was defective and I should return it. Thinking that this can happen once, I ordered a replacement unit. Guess what? this one did not work as well. The same exact problem - the unit did not get an ip and therefore was not detected. Again customer support and again I was told to return the unit. I am not buying an IOGEAR again.

IOGEAR USB Print Server
My occupation is a computer technician and I could not get this device to issue an IP address after 3 tech support calls and 2 replacement units.IOGEAR tech support is unhelpful at best and their products seem to be hit or miss.Unless you want a 20 dollar paper weight with a USB and Ethernet port then I would stay far away!
