romex 12/3.../ i am using romex 12/3. what do you do with the red or fourth wire?

I'm not an electrician, but I agree with Tim. That assumes that you only have 12/3 entering the box, and it doesn't have to continue on to another box. You would just put a wire nut on the red wire, without further connection. The 12/3 would ordinarily be used for a 3-way lighting circuit, rather than to supply an outlet. So, I'm not sure why it is being used in this application.
