Art Pepper was a fabulous instrumentalist, and his playing and improvisation on this album is marvellous to hear.The other players in the band are also fabulous.

These records (yes, they were vinyl back in the 1980s when I first bought them) opened my ears to real jazz. I was lucky enough to see Art perform in Sydney in 1983 and he was mind blowing. The music on these CDs (as they now are) will blow your mind if you haven't heard them before. Hell, they still blow mine and I've heard them heaps of times. If there was a more passionate and exciting alto player I must have missed him. Art Pepper was the greatest. So do not hesitate Amazon reader. Buy all these CDs and play them to death. If you are purely a digital platform enthusiast then buy the downloads and play them to death. It's some of the best fun you can have with your clothes on.

These are Art Pepper's first LIVE recordings ever. If you're a fan of his, all four CD's are essential. If not, I'd give the edge to Fri. & Sat. as great listening for anyone. There is not an Alto player today that has his fire and passion. He was a very personal and incredible musician. Comparisons to Sonny Stitt, Sonny Criss, Phil Woods and Cannonball are pointless. They all followed 'Bird and found their own sound. He's in a relaxed atmosphere here with a great rhythm section allowing him total freedom. George Cables, George Mraz and Elvin Jones. Shortly before he died, he said he was the world's best living saxophonist - maybe he was. As 'Bird once said "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Art Pepper certainly did.

All the Village Vanguard CDs are great later Pepper. His intensity is all the more evident in this live date. You won't be disappointed with this one.

I have owned the Thursday Night set for a long time now, and it’s one of my most-played CDs. The Saturday Night set is not quite up to that standard, but it’s fine fine music. At this stage in his career, Pepper had a lot going for him; he was off drugs, newly married and managed by his new wife Laurie. He also had some stellar musicians working with him.! George Cables‘ lyricism complements the raw emotion of Pepper, and George Mraz and Elvin Jones are as excellent as ever, even if Elvin is much more restrained than in his Coltrane years. A fine album.

Cet album fait partie de 4 albums enregistrés live par le saxophoniste au cours de 3 soirées de juillet 1977 au célèbre club new yorkais avec une section rythmique exceptionnelle comportant non seulement son fidèle complice George CABLES au piano (avec qui il enregistrera de nombreux autres albums), mais aussi le bassiste George MRAZ et le batteur Elvin JONES. Au cours de ces sessions, Art est particulièrement à son affaire et ses improvisations sont très inspirées. Les 4 albums édités à cette occasion méritent largement de faire partie d’une discothèque de jazz ; ils comptent parmi les meilleurs enregistrements d’Art PEPPER, au même titre que la plupart de ses albums GALAXY.L’album du samedi dure 51 min 30 et commence par la très belle ballade « You go to my head » où dans les notes du livret, Art avoue avoir été très à l’aise avec le bassiste George MRAZ (avec lequel pourtant il a peu enregistré), se poursuit par « The trip », une de ses compositions où le travail d’Elvin JONES fait merveille (il avoue que c’est probablement l’une de ses meilleures versions !). Vient ensuite une longue (presque 16 min) version de « Cherokee » qu’il interprète de façon inhabituelle au saxophone ténor et le CD se termine par un bonus, constitué par une belle version de « For Freddie », une autre de ses compositions au dynamisme réjouissant.
