How often do you have to change the filter?

With our terrible water quality (500 ppm TDS) my filter lasts about a week, or about 10 gallons. But I learned a little trick. After one filter is at the end of its life, instead of throwing it away, I use it as a prefilter, for a second pass through a brand new filter. This way, the old filter (flawed as it is) removes about 95% of the impurities, increasing the lifetime of the new filter by more than an order of magnitude! So, I first filter through an old filter, THEN that pre-filtered water goes through the new one;) That way, I'm able to get about 100 gallons, instead of the 10 I'd get, if I only used a single filter. Another way would be to simply use two new filters; the first filter would catch nearly everything, and the second filter would get what little remained, after the first filter begins to fail, and would therefore last a VERY long time.

What happened to the filter quality? I've had filters last 6 months and so many complaints about the filters I'm worried about buying news ones.

I am now having the same problem. My water without filter reads from 160-170. The filter that came with my pitcher lasted 5 mos. The 6 filters I bought since then are only lasting 4 wks tops. We use the same amount of water give or take a few glasses every day so it is not that we are using more. I test my water pre and post filter at least 1 time per week and the pre filter water has never been over 170. Maybe something to write the manufacturer about?
