Good step by step guide, beginer to intermediate level

I am very dissapointed. I expect more than thousands of useless words of theory. This kind of books should not be published because the tittle differs from the content.

This book teaches you how to implement effective and efficient SAP HANA “native” solutions also known as SAP HANA Stand-Alone solutions. It is not about SAP BW on HANA. If you have a solid background in relational databases, you will find many well-known concepts and surprising details. If you are familiar with ABAP programming or SAP BW development, this book will help you to adapt your mind to a new way of database modeling and development.Do not expect another book rehearsing the stuff you learned for your SAP HANA certification or in the online documentation. This is just the foundation you have to bring. The book takes you from apprenticeship to mastery – it is not recommended for the beginner. But it is not easy reading. You should know the “terms of the trade” to benefit from the profound knowledge of the authors.The remarkable characteristic is the highly structured collection of best practices, hands-on experience and runtime measure measurement covering the core features of SAP HANA. Almost three quarters of the 300 pages show precisely the behavior of information views, filters, calculated columns, joins and much more. SAP HANA offers with a lot of alternatives to answer a business question. But have you ever compared them in terms of their performance? The good news is: you need not – this book provides you with the necessary background knowledge to figure it out already in the design phase.The authors analyzed the resource consumption (CPU time and main memory) response times in many situations which are typical when you develop a solution using mostly graphical modeling. You learn the surprising fact that the built-in currency conversion is much slower than a “home-grown” implementation and gain de-mystifying insight about CE functions and engine performance.All the analyzed scenarios are based on a set of test data. Hopefully, the authors and the editor will provide in the next edition access the test data set they used for their work. I recommend replaying the more advanced technologies (e.g., impact of the KEEP flag, implementation of exception aggregation) on your own. This would make some statements in the book easier to comprehend. I am also missing more illustrations and examples in a couple of sections on advanced topics.The scenarios are complemented with many references to SAP documents where the reader will find additional in-depth information. A chapter on general architecture challenges in operational reporting based on SAP HANA Stand-Alone solutions (also known as “Virtual Warehouse”) completes this most useful text book.
