Madhushala

मुझे बहुत तरस आता है उन लोंगो पर जिन्हें हिन्दी अच्छे से नही आती होगी, क्योंकि वे चूक जाएंगे इस असाधारण मदिरा से...लेकिन मेरे समझ से इसका अनुवाद भी नहीं किया जा सकता क्योंकि ऐसा करने से इसकी आत्मा ही मर जाएगी।मधुशाला की तुलना हमेशा से "रश्मिरथी, कामायनी और गीतांजली" से होती रही है मैं इन्हें भी पढ़ चुका हूँ और मेरे लिए तो मधुशाला न केवल इन सबसे बल्कि मेरे अब तक के पढ़े सारे साहित्यिक कृतियों से यहाँ तक कि कृष्ण की गीता से भी ज़्यादा दिल के करीब है।जबकि गीता और मधुशाला में बात एक ही हो रही है लेकिन...गीता में दवा पिलाई जा रही है बड़ी गंभीरता से और मधुशाला में शराब पिलाई जा रही है बड़े मस्ती के साथ...इसलिए गीता की मैं इज़्ज़त करता हूँ लेकिन मधुशाला से प्रेम। और हाँ...मेरे आध्यात्मिक सफर की शुरुआत भी मधुशाला से ही हुई है।अगर आप समझ सकें तो समझिए ज़रा...इसके हर एक रुबाई के अलग अलग Level पर जाकर कैसे अलग अलग अर्थ निकलते हैं लेकिन पढ़ने वाला जिस Level पर होता है वो उसी के According अर्थ निकाल पता है लेकिन इसमे कोई Boundation नहीं है जो भी समझना है समझो खुली छूट है बच्चन आप पर कोई विचार नहीं थोपते हैं, लेकिन असल मे ये जो मधुशाला है वो एक खोज है एक ऐसे "State of Mind" को पा लेने की खोज जिसके पीछे हर इंसान जाने अंजाने भाग रहा है इसे पाने के लिए बहुतों ने कोई न कोई Materialistic Goals बनाये हैं और कुछ के Spiritual Goals भी हैं लेकिन अलग अलग रास्ते से चलकर भी पाना है सभी को वही एक "Sate of Mind" जिसे बच्चन साहब यहाँ मधुशाला का नाम दे दिए हैं। दरअसल इंसान के Materialistic Attitude से लेकर Spirituality तक God तक इतना Deep Level पर ले जाकर बात होती है और वो भी "हाला, प्याला, साकीबाला, मधुशाला" जैसे शब्दों का Use करते हुए इतना Indirectly बात होती है की आप बोलोगे Fu#k Man...😲 ऊपर-ऊपर से पढ़ने में ये कितना Simple लग रहा था लेकिन इतना Deep इतना गहरा नशा...बहुत कम लोंग हैं जो मधुशाला को इस Level पर जाकर समझ पाते हैं और उनमें से ही एक खुशकिस्मत शायद मैं भी हूँ इसलिए कह रहा हूँ की इसका Translation किया ही नहीं जा सकता।ठीक है आप कर तो लोगे लेकिन एक ही रुबाई में ये जो 4-4, 5-5 Levels पर जाकर अलग अलग अर्थ निकल रहे हैं किसी प्याज़ के छिलके की तरह जैसे ढके हुए हों और हर एक अर्थ के साथ अपनी एक Feelings जुड़ी हुई है क्या उन्हें हु-ब-हु बैठाया जा सकेगा? पूरे 135 रुबाई का अंत हर बार मधुशाला शब्द पर ही होता है क्या ये दोबारा हो सकेगा? जो नशा जो ख़ुमारी इसके मदमाते शब्दों में है वो क्या अनुवादित शब्दों में मिल सकेगा? मधुशाला को गाने का अपना एक नशा है गुनगुनाये बिना प्याला खाली ही रह जाता है क्या अनुवाद के बाद ये गाने लायक बचेगा?मेरे ख्याल से मधुशाला एक चमत्कार था जैसे गीता एक चमत्कार था...भगवान कृष्ण भी गीता को दोबारा ठीक वैसे न सुना सकें जैसा पहली बार सुनाये थें ठीक वैसे ही बच्चन साहब मधुशाला के बाद मधुशाला जैसा नशा अपने दूसरे काव्यों में कभी न डाल सकें।फिलहाल मैं बस यही कह सकता हूँ कि मैं ख़ुशनसीब हूँ क्योंकि मैं एक हिन्दीभाषी हूँ और इस नाते मेरे पास मधुशाला जैसी सबसे खूबसूरत चीज़ है।अंत मे बच्चन साहब के लिए मेरा मौन...जिसमे उनके लिए मेरा प्यार छिपा है।❣️

For the first time, I'm deviating from my usual method of reviewing. First of all, I believe poetry is not something which can be reviewed. Secondly, when it is an epic work like this, one can only express their views.Views:I had the pleasure of reading this book recently; written in 1933-34, sometime around when my grandparents were born. It makes me wonder; books, literature, written material is so wonderful. To have survived through generations.In In the Afternoon of Time: An Autobiography by Harivansh Rai Bachchan, he states that "imitations or parodies of Madhushala had begun to appear immediately after its first public reading: the day after my recitation at Benares Hindu University in December 1933, Professor Manoranjan Prasad dashed off imitations of several verses and recited them during the course of my own readings the day following". In this book, from the fifteenth edition, the same professor has shared his experiences of the seminar along with a few quatrains of the parody he had created based on Bachchan's poem. Prof. Prasad writes that, and I translate, "My Madhushala concerns the materialistic, unlike Bachchan's mystic Madhushala".Hindi is not my first language, and hence I had difficulty in understanding many of the verses. I had to consult a dictionary most of the times but, as they say, a literal translation is never impressive as far as poetry is concerned. I have also come across some translations by fellow readers/bloggers but, there also, the essence of the poem gets lost in translation. Now, the perfect and most poetic translation of this piece in English is the one done by Marjorie Boulton & Ram Swaroop Vyas, first published by Fortune Press in 1950, and the revised edition published by Penguin Books in 1989. In 2009, in India, from what I gathered from press reports; Madhushala – The House of Wine was reproduced again, this time with illustrations, and launched with much fanfare with the entire Bachchan clan in attendance. It's been nine years since, but I just could not find a single edition of that book anywhere. Why is it so? I couldn't find it in any of the publisher's websites either. And the few sites, including Amazon, where it is available, it costs a bomb! I would have loved to read it, in its entirety. It would have given me a better understanding of the text. As of now, only Columbia University's website has a PDF version of the book but, only the first twenty-five of the one-hundred-and-thirty-five quatrains are available in scanned format; while select American Universities have an edition of the same book in their library. I have added the link below to the same.I don’t know why, studying both English and Hindi from the first standard itself, I haven’t been able to embrace the latter as well as I have done the former. There is nothing to talk about content of the book everybody knows how great harivanshrai bacchan. Here I am mentioning about physical condition of copy that I received condition is good little damage on the corners that acceptable and page quality is decent.

Lovely

It’s extreme of Hindi literature in terms of expression and flow. Must read. I studied Bacchan sir’s poems in school first. After long pause I am enjoying his poems again. Immortal creation.
