How many seconds before the earthquake the sensor can detect the p wave ?

Well, actually this morning a quake hit us on the southern part of the island and the alarm went off between 5 to 10 seconds before me and my wife could notice the actual shaking!

If I’m not home when the alarm goes off, does it shuts off automatically?

The alarm only goes off when a tremor is occurring. It shuts off when the tremor stops.
