How many pounds of sand does it take to fill a 36 x 36 base?

Here is my suggestion.  Use H2O, not sand.  I bought the base for this unit.  The first year I used sand...big mistake because lugging this thing around was very inconvenient at the end of the season.  So I emptied out the sand (A messy job requiring a strong hose), and the next season (this season) I simply filled it with H2O.  At the end of the season, drain the H2O and store the unt in my attic.  Quick and easy.

how do you empty water from base?

There are large screws on two sides which allow most water to get out, then you can turn on its side to get most of the rest out.

How often should the water be replaced? Seems it would go stagnant after while.

I bring the umbrella and stand in each winter and drain the water then, otherwise I would think annually would be sufficient.

How do you fill it and insert umbrella.  There are no directions.

I didn't want to use sand in the base (hard to drain), so used water. I sealed the lower plugs using plumbers tape (easy to find at hardware store). Otherwise may leak slightly. Once filled with water, LOOSELY screw in the top plugs. Water expands in heat. This allows a release of it. Otherwise it will leak in lower plug, which you don't want. For the umbrella, don't use the stand that came with the umbrella. Just slip the sleeve over the stem, slide stem into slots of the base and tighten screws. Should be self evident one you start into it.
