The new and improved Drive Medical Premium Guard Gel Foam Overlay optimizes pressure redistribution and comfort in the prevention, treatment and management of pressure ulcers. The new design ideally combines 15 gel bladders, high density foam shell and a vinyl support base. The improved design decreases the migration of the gel layer, so patient won't bottom out and the convoluted, egg crate, foam, top layer provides vastly improved comfort.

Works well for my partially paralyzed elderly dad
My dad is partially paralyzed from a stroke and we have to be very careful when he's sleeping that he doesn't develop bed sores. This gel mattress overlay has worked very well for him. It does have to be replaced every year or so because it loses its shape, but it has worked well. Also, I ordered this replacement on August 1 and didn't expect to receive it for at least a week, so I couldn't believe it when it arrived 2 days later on August 3! Talk about quick shipping!

Te product could be a little more substantial.
for a quick fix its acceptable for short term. It seems to develop a memory of buttocks convex pothole.

It really helped my mom sleep, until... (See update)
Recently my 93 year old mom was in hospital and during an extended stay developed bed sores. They were healed in her rehab stay and was prescribed a hospital type bed and an alternating air mattress to maintain her skin. I had noticed that the mattress in her rehab had a very soft top even though it was air. Well the one at home that Medicare provided only had a thin cover that barely provided any protection from the air tubes. Mom couldn't sleep very well. I did some research and asked her care givers about the difference in surfaces. Seems as she healed they gave her the thicker topped mattress to maintain the skin. The thin surface is more necessary during the initial healing. So I got this topper and it now is a comfortable bed and she can sleep. If her skin breaks down I can remove the topper for more direct therapy. So far that's not needed. I am topping a Drive bed and air mattress so it fits well. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is it seems to me sagging in the center and it's not rotatable as far as I understand. I have the air mattress set to steady and firm to fully support the topper.Update: 10/20/12Boy what a difference a year and a half makes. Mom is now 94, the air mattress was replaced with a Drive Medical standard mattress and this "topper" is on its way to the trash. I am very disappointed in the Drive topper. It has over time, cratered severely and hardened. Mom doesn't like to complain but I couldn't help but notice as I changed the bedding how much this thing deteriorated. I di try rotating it but you can't really flip it as there ia an A side and a B side. A is the blue top side. I am replacing it with a more traditional 3" memory foam topper and wrapping it in a water shielding Sealy mattress pad. This is way more comfortable for her.I can NOT recommend this product any longer. I lowered my stars to Two and that is very generous.

Just OK
At least this was the right size for a hospital bed, not too wide or too long. However, it's not particularly comfortable. Patient complains of lumpiness, and it's not very soft. Had to add a couple inches of memory foam to make it more sleepable.

AWFUL
Bought wtis one 3 times before. This one sounds like you are laying on plastic covered mattress, it's hard and my butt are starts burning at night. Drive Medical changed the cover not my choice anymore.

Durable comfort for loved ones
This gel mattress pad fit both a regular double bed and a standard hospital bed. Provided comfort for an ailing elderly patient. It has elastic straps in the corners to keep it in place. Wipes clean, easy to disinfect if needed, and very well made - heavy duty. I've encountered many Drive products in the assisted living facility with which I became familiar. Drive products are widely used, durable, and high quality. This particular pad is being sold here at a very good price point. It is heavy, though, and transporting is a bit unwieldy (while still in the shipping box). Out of the box, one can "hug" the folded pad and it is more easily moved.

Works well but.......
Works well. Does tend to sag after 3-4 months of daily use. My mom is large in the hips . We bought this to put over her bed while she was in rehab. It defiantly did the job and kept her from getting a bed sore. Well worth the money to prevent long term skin issues!!!!

Great for our needs
This mattress topper is for my grandmother as a replacement for the one that wore out. We use it directly on top of the hospital bed. Amazon priced it about $100 lower than the local medical supply store, even with shipping. Remarkably, we received it within just a couple days. That was amazing. I understand they only last 2-3 years and getting a new one really improved my grandmother's aching back which happened as a result of the old one. We'll definitely be back for a new one in a few years. Very pleased with the overall experience.
