I live in Dalby, rural Australia. Australia has extremely archaic standards on lead levels, allowing 4.5% lead content in faucet fittings (as opposed to .25% in the USA/Canada). There are many old lead pipes in Australia's plumbing, but the government has avoided expensive replacements claiming the lead levels in the water are "natural". The government has recently begun recommending all households run their faucets for 30 seconds first, before drinking the water... My water tastes metallic. Are lead levels elevated in my water? I don't know, probably not, I don't care. There is inevitably some amount of lead, and it is inevitably going to be reduced by this filter. There's really no safe amount of lead, the less the better. A recent sampling of 212 households in NSW, Australia found that 56% of the 212 households had detectable levels of lead in their water, and 8% exceeded allowable Australian standards for lead. Granted, elevated blood levels of lead have rarely been found to be linked to drinking water. But keep in mind, children consume more water relative to their body mass than adults, and children have developing brains. We needed a water filter anyway, as our water tastes awful. The water now tastes good, the chlorine taste is gone, and almost all of any lead will be gone. There is also a pretty impressive list of other chemicals this filter removes. The water does filter quite slowly, but the filter has been working great for a month. For the very rare people who have highly unsafe tap water but don't know it, lead is a suspected carcinogen, and this filter literally might save you from cancer. If you're going to have a filter anyway, the lead versions are well worth the few extra dollars simply for peace of mind. I was deeply disappointed to learn our local Brita Maxtra filters do very little for water safety or lead, but merely improve the taste. The Pur lead filters actually work out to about the same price, assuming you get free international shipping from Amazon USA. For any other Australians, you can get free international shipping for these Filters from Amazon USA with an Amazon Prime Australia Account for $59 annually. Pur water filters for pitchers do not appear to be available locally.
