Anything you will ever need to know.
It really bothers me that people actually go and buy a camera and never really learn how to use it. It seems to a status symbol. I always made it a point to see just what setting was being used. Probably 95 % of the time I saw either P or A. I even once heard a discussion about a new camera and how complicated the "instructions" were, "so I just keep it on automatic, the pictures are fantastic". To think they could have spent $200 instead of $800+ and take pictures that were just as fantastic. "An expensive Dslr makes me look like a real photographer." And digital photography allows practically anyone to shoot a good photo.I didn't want to be one of those people. I had waited too long to buy my first Dslr camera. In the film days I carried around a Canon A-1 with a power winder and a 28- 250 zoom lens. It probably weighed 8 or 9 pounds, but took excellent photos. When digital cameras came on the scene they were small and light and did far more than my old A-1. When the first Dslr came out I was appalled at their size, weight and especially cost (around $1500-2000). So I waited for a small, light Dslr to hit the market. The Canon Rebel EOS SL1 is amazing but a little more than a novice Dslr (even though that is the category it was placed in) I decided that if I was going to spend that much for a great camera I better darn well learn how to use it to its full extent.Mr. Busch's book is exactly what you need to squeeze every drop of performance from this fine camera and he leaves no stone unturned. he doesn't explain things he makes sure you learn them. I learned so much about this camera and about photography with this camera that I was in awe. I've been taking photos for over 45 years and now that I am retired I feel like a photographer again. I don't think I will remember everything, but it will be near by as long for reference as I own this camera, which I hope is a long time. If you want to learn everything possible and how to use a Canon Rebel EOS SL1, this is the text to buy.

You NEED This Book to Get the Most Out of Your Camera
You just plunked down $600 for your digital SLR. You could just turn your camera on, leave it in "auto" mode, and take photos just like you did with your point-and-shoot camera. But if that's all you're going to do, why did you upgrade? You need to know what your camera is capable of doing and more importantly HOW to do it. For a small investment (compared to your camera purchase), David D. Busch will walk you through everything you need to know.I was a high school yearbook adviser for 37 years before retiring last spring. For the past ten years, I simply borrowed a camera whenever I needed one--usually the Canon 40D. Now that I no longer have "borrowing" privileges, I shopped around for a camera that would be user-friendly for both my wife and me. I settled on the Rebel SL1 primarily because of the smaller body size. It did come with a 116-page Basic Instruction Manual. It contains a lot of good information, but it's a small (4" x 6") format size and none of the illustrations are in color. Obviously, I needed something more complete and more importantly something larger.Busch's guide book is very easy to use and understand even if you've never used an SLR before. With more than 400 pages and hundreds of photos (all of them in color), Busch covers everything from focus and exposure to downloading, editing and printing. And a meticulous 27-page index will help you locate the answer to any question you might have. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Good starting piont
The book certainly explains features of the camera much better than the manual does. There is also some insight on taking pictures with a DSLR which is helpful. Overall I would say that if you have owned previous DSLR's its probably not worth it (3 stars). However, if you are brand new to taking photos with a DSLR(or a canon - SL1 obviously) in general then it would be a good buy (4 stars), so thus the 4 star rating.I am new to taking photos with dslr's, but I had done quite extensive research online with free tips/instructions, so the book wasn't as advanced as I hoped, however I did learn how to use my SL1 a little better and the chapter on exposure was particularly helpful.

User friendly
I bought the camera after a lifetime of wanting an SLR camera. My son bought the Rebel T3i for his wife. I found it a little too intimidating and pricey for me. When the introduced the SL1, the timing and price were right. Now, how to use the advanced features, after a lifetime of point and shoot models. Et voila! Mr. Busch publishes this excellent guide. Admittedly, I have only made it through the intro and chapter 1, but that is why I am writing this now. Mr. Busch writes with such an easy, conversational style, that it makes you want to go on. I'm giving it 5 stars as a guide for a neophyte such as I, but I believe even experienced DSLR users will find useful info in this book.

Love this Canon SL1 guide book!!!
David Busch's Canon EOS Rebel SL1/100D Guide to Digital SLR Photography is a fantastic book! Because this is my first DSLR camera, I knew that I needed a guide to understanding and learning about the different settings and functions. The chapters are very detailed and easy to follow. The figures and tables included in this book are very helpful. I haven't gone through all the chapters, but of what I've read and seen, I know that this book will teach me all that I need to know about my new camera.

NOT REALLY NEEDED !
Excellent book, indeed; But really not needed you get the same information on THE COMPLETE MANUAL (338 pages) provided as PDF in the CD ROM....the only advantage is that is really easier to read and go to to different sections on a book than on a monitor.

Amazon made process easy and quick
FYI: Flip through book to ascertain that all pages are in tact. I had to ship back because, about 50 pages were cut in half. However, Amazon made process easy and quick! It was no inconvenience to ship back. Received new product in about 3 days, no problem. Great, easy to read literature. I am new to photography, and this book has been a pleasure to read and comprehend.

I needed this
I often learn about my equipment through use, rather than through reading. However, it wasn't long after receiving my Canon EOS 100D that I decided that it was full-featured enough to merit some help. The author states, honestly enough, that everything you need is in the small handbook that comes with the camera, but also points out (and I agree) that it's small, black and white, and the bare minimum. Buscch's book is the reverse - large, colourful, and plenty of explanation. In addition, he also discourses on some of the unique features of digital photography, and how it differs from the era of film. Plenty of meat here, but approachable. Recommended.

Four Stars
It's a bit much to read through cover to cover but as a reference guide it's just the job.
