A while ago the ABRSM reviewed their syllabus for theory exams. They abandoned some ideas of composition and focused on the core elements: * Rhythm * Pitch * Keys and scales * Intervals * Chords * Terms and signs Each chapter is clearly laid out and gives examples to follow. Typically, the ABRSM are out to make more money from you, so you'll have to buy the answer book if you're doing it self-study.
