Yup, this works for it's intended purpose. Never, never use cheap no-name climbing gear. You're literally betting your life on it working. IDK about you, but my life is worth it.

I got this because I'd been having to borrow my friend's every time it was her turn to climb. This is the same one she has, except the newer version. Also, way prettier (hers is just plain silver). The blue is just gorgeous in person, and this one has a nice texturing to it. My favorite part of this belay device is how much friction there is against the rope. I honestly feel like you would have to be trying to drop someone. It makes me feel secure when belaying - I'm finally able to relax and stop white-knuckling it so my hands actually have recovery time in between climbs. The carabiner is high quality and easy to maneuver as well as the belay device. This is a great combo for a great price (my friend has pro-deals and tried to find something for me for a better price but couldn't). Go for it, you'll be pleased.

Why did you pick this product vs others?: Good tube device

I'm a rock climber. In my experience, Black Diamond equipment is *ALWAYS* reliable. I've used this ATC for rappelling and it performed great. The teeth on the inside provide a nice amount of bite, which will take some strain away from whichever hand you're using to feed the rope. For belaying, I prefer to use a Grigri, so I haven't used this ATC for belaying. It comes with a large carabiner that is great for belaying and rappelling, I chose this package over a standalone ATC because it came with a very nice carabiner, and for the price it was a no-brainer. I'd highly recommend this ATC/carabiner combo.

Got this to get back into rock climbing and it works perfectly for beginners learning as well as those who are more experienced who want a cheaper option than an alpine device. You’re able to run twin or double ropes if that’s your thing or a single rope works just fine if you’re just doing some gym or top rope routes.

I have not climbed with these yet, but they look really good and sturdy. I'm looking forward to seeing how the high-friction mode of the ATC compares to the regular ATC that I'm used to. The carabiner I received had a visible defect on the nose, so I submitted a warranty claim with Black Diamond and they quickly sent a replacement. Great customer service and a company you can trust! The replacement they sent was actually a Black Diamond RockLock Screwgate carabiner, and I like it much more than the one that came in this combo. The original carabiner only needed about 1.5 turns of the screw to open the gate -- a bit too small for my peace of mind. The RockLock needs about 3 full turns to open the gate, which feels much more secure to me. So I would actually recommend you get the Black Diamond ATC-XP and RockLock Screwgate carabiner separately, rather than this combo. Either way, Black Diamond makes good gear and I highly recommend.

If just getting into climbing and still not sure if the sport is for you and don’t want to borrow ur friends piece than this is a perfect option If you are thinking about long term climbing u might wanna skip this purchase and check out auto locking belay devices. I use Mammut 2.0 cuz that’s what my friend had. Just started lead climbing and prefer this atc over Mammut but it doesn’t have the safety features I want. I’m leaning towards edelrid giga jul as being my last lifetime device(tbd) despite grigri being very popular for auto locking devices Also, auto locking carabiners are nice to since I have dementia when it comes to screwing the lock. Again do your research I bought a triple action and used it with Mammut and it was thin to the point where the lessened friction made it hard to control my climbers descent

Have friends with this set/combination so knew what to expect. Well made, sturdy. Happy with it.
