I have struggled with can openers for years. This one is fantastic and opens cans easily. I have had it for months now, and it's a good as new. It works by removing the entire lid, which is much smarter. It seems very sturdy, and the wheel turns easily.

Sturdy, cuts from the side and very easy to use. Has lasted longer (hasn’t broken with use) than others I’ve purchased plus the can lid doesn’t fall into the ingredients without any sharp edges. I bought a spare, just in case, but so far I haven’t had to use it. I hate traditional can openers and this one is easy to use with its parrot beak to grab hard to lift lids. It’s a YES!

Wish everyone would switch to these safety edged can openers. Backing it off the lid can be tricky until you get the knack of pushing the handle back. The lid gripper is a necessity especially when the lid is sealed. It works well and protects people and animals from serious cuts.

Awkward to use. The grip on the lid and cutting mechanism slips as it cuts, making the process of removal a chore. The can opener starts fine, turning the can as you go, but it quickly slips off and you have to attach the can opener repeatedly to go all the way round, fighting to get a cut in fluid once-round top removal. The crank knobe is textured with hard plastic and, after one can cut, your finger are a bit raw from the friction. And removing the excised lid it’s a struggle to release the lid. A quick release mechanism would work wonders. The current release is by changing the direction of the cut turn (opposite turn of crank) sometimes work, sometimes pulling the can opener and lid apart with a plier. Final thought: cool concept but better examples of this design can be found.

This can opener is the best in the world, bar none. I've been using one for the past 25 years and it is still going strong. To use, you just make sure the cutting wheel is on the outside of the can's lip, and the serrated driving wheel is on the inside and start turning the butterfly knob clockwise. After about 13 to 14 half-turns, a 19oz can should be open. Less turns are needed for a 14 or 10oz can. You should feel a certain slackness suddenly happen to the turning knob. That's an indication the cutting wheel has come into the groove it had started cutting in the can top a full turn ago, and the cutting of the can top is done and the can should be fully open. Just apply a slight back-turn on the knob to release the cutting wheel and use the pincers on the side of the opener (a 90 degree turn to the right does it) to grab the can top, press down on the black button on the now top of the opener (originally the left side of the device) and lift the top a little then twist lightly to right and left to get the gum to let go of the can top. It should come off very easily. Since the cut happens directly on the lip where the can top overlaps the wall of the can, there are no sharp edges to cut you because the bottom part of the outer edge of the lid is still attached to the outside wall all around the can. Hence the name Securimax of this opener. This opener can open any can of any size or shape, aluminium or steel. I have opened rectangular sardine and fish fillet cans as well as the bigger oval cans holding big sardines. Even cans with hooks in them so you can open them without a can opener, but which leave you with a dangerously sharp can top and inside edge on the top where you can very easily cut yourself, as when you are washing the can prior to putting it in the recycling bin. I'm surprised Starfrit is not keeping this item in constant production, because there is no way of getting this opener on the retail market. I tried a few months ago to obtain one from a known previoius retailer of this item (they still sell other Starfrit products of a similar nature) only to be told by the person in charge of ordering that even the company from which they obtained their stock didn't have any in stock and didn't know if they would ever get some any more. I bought these two to make sure I would have a replacement if ever my present opener's cutting wheel couldn't cut anymore, as there is no way to change a used part on this. The only way Starfrit could improve on this opener would be to make an electric model. I would prefer a plugged-in model for the torque needed to open a can. Also they could develop a model for restaurants with a long handle so they could open bigger, 48 and 64oz cans, even gallon-sized cans, at that.

I cannot believe I am writing a review on a CAN OPENER but this one is amazing. So up until now, I had used two designs. The usual kind which cuts just the top lid from above, leaving a very sharp edge behind, and the ones which cut from the side below the lip. Both those designs left sharp edges, but the one which cut from the side left not just a sharp edge but also cut the top reinforced ring which kept the can strong. So when you grabbed the can it was easy to squeeze it and if it had anything juicy it would spill. Well enter the new design. This can opened cuts from the side, yes, but it cuts halfway through the reinforced ring at the top of the can. Leaving half the ring at the top means the can structure remains strong but that's not all. It leaves no sharp edges on the lid it cut or on the can itself. None. It is very easy to use and by far the best can opener I have ever used. As a bonus, the cutting edge of the can opener is difficult to get to and cut yourself with. A truly amazing design. The unit is made of mostly plastic but it appears to be sturdy. It does not require a lot of strength to use. I recommend this to anyone who opens cans frequently.

I've been looking for a decent can opener for awhile, about a year. I've went thru 3 different brands this year alone. 2 hand held openers, one was a kitchen aid brand. That one didn't last 3 months. So I went with an electric. A hamilton beach brand. That one worked only on small cans. It would struggle to open the larger cans. It seemed the motor wasn't strong enough to hold and open the large can.It would keep dying out. So gave up looking in the stores and I found this one on amazon. It;s unique in that it opens the can from the side, horizontally. Took a bit to get the hang of it, but once I got it,, it's been great. Requires little effort so it would be good for seniors. Your not over exerting your hands to open a can like other hand held openers.And once the lid is off, it leaves no sharp edges on the rim of the can or the lid. There's also a little button on the side that allows you to grip the lid and dispose of it without touching the lid or getting cut. I'm glad I went with Starfrit, no problems at all with this opener. It's been a couple of months now and it has lasted longer than that Kitchen Aid I had..Thanks a lot..

A few months ago, my two-handed Starfrit can opener died. I had purchased it in the early 90s, so I couldn't complain about not getting good use from it. With that in mind, I read through the descriptions of too many can openers before settling on this one-handed model by Starfrit. I confess I still have a one-handed can opener from Europe, a cranky geriatric affair made of metal and saved for just-in-case situations. Even at 50, It can still splutter its way through a tin if it has to. Based on my experience when we were both younger, I decided to see how well a one-handed model by Starfrit--a model that was on sale!--would fare. The answer is: very well. The opener attaches easily to the can, and the grip is large, stable and easy to turn. Once you have made the circuit around the can, all you have to do is turn counter-clockwise to detach the opener. It is easy to clean the surface of the cutting wheel, which is important, since contaminated residue on the mechanism causes many cases of domestic food poisoning each year. Despite its virtues, I don't know if my new Starfrit ,will survive as long as the old one, however. The quality of the plastic is different. No longer rubbery, it seems more brittle, and possibly more vulnerable to breakage, should it fall from the dish-rack to the kitchen floor one time too many. When I washed it recently, I was surprised to see water dripping from the open seam that runs along the handle. I made a mental note to clean the handle with a dishcloth in future, while subjecting the head to more rigorous cleaning. Compared to its predecessor, this one-handed model removes the top more cleanly, with no jagged edges. That's an important improvement! All in all, a good product, even if I am a little skeptical of the material. Yes, Virgina, one-handed can openers are a thing and they can in fact work really well, like this one.
