Retractable Caster Kit for Workbench
Everything in my workshop except my lathe, is on casters, that includes my Milling Machine. My 44"x80" bench is now that last piece of equipment to has the ability to roll into a new position if needed. I designed and built my workbench in my shop while working on a Star Trek the Next Generation so it can travel to the next location or job site with ease. The bench was always intended to have some sort of caster system but not one where it rested on the wheels all the time. The selection of this casters system was specific to the weight the bench carries (ie; Oak machinist tool chest at 300lbs, surface plate at 60lbs, bend/brake at 60lbs, lower self storage at 200lbs, the bench itself at 80lbs and whatever tooling or work that is on the bench at the time). According to the specifications of the casters, I am at the casters limit, yet when I engage them and roll the bench about the shop, it floats like a breeze. The assembly and installation was super simple but I "did not" use the supplied screws to mount the caster plates to the bench legs. Instead I drilled the legs and used 2 1/2" 1/4-20 bolts with lock nuts to secure the caster plate to the legs. Wood screws always give out eventually, so with the weight of the bench and the load it carries the last thing I would want is a caster to give way while it is moving. The supplied hole pattern guide was very helpful to make a jig for drilling the holes through the leg, so if one uses the supplied screws, the guide is super handy to set the height of the screw pattern every time. The best thing to remember when installing this system is to install the main plate first, then the hinge pieces with the wheels. If you are disabled like I am and are going to use the 24 bolts rather than screws, the best way to install is the assemble the plate to the hinge pieces, mount to the legs of the bench and install the wheels last. Another small tip is to use "CAR WAX" in the areas where the hinge arm meets the caster swing arm to reduce friction. It makes engaging and then retracting the casters much easier. For the fantastic price, and the good construction of this caster system, I was extremely impressed with the quality, easy of installation and the tooling supplied to help attach the actual caster to the swing arm. If you have a bench that you need a caster system for, this is the choice to make.... period. Note: Once the casters are installed and engaged, be sure to check the stability of your bench legs. If a bench leg or legs seem to wiggle/sway where it meet the bench top as it moves, you need to brace the legs with an angle bracket of some sort as I did to avoid the legs collapsing.

Work Ok
These work ok but they have a couple of issues. First if lightly loaded, they can go over center in the wrong direction. This causes the wheel to contact the wooden leg and lock the wheel. This is not a huge problem because if loaded they are pretty stable. The second is that when in the wheel down they are slightly tilted and not level. This sometimes causes the caster to swivel making the bench move. On a concrete floor it’s kind of annoying for the bench to move a bit on its own. On the positive side, the wheels are robust and the mount is made of heavy gauge steel. The mounting screws are probably a bit short but seem to work fine. When raising the bench they operate easily and lock into position as they should. Going the other way is a bit difficult but is to be expected. In general they get the job done and are a reasonable price.

Surprisingly Good Product
These are good products. They are made with heavy gage metal and well engineered. They work very well on my heavy steel frame workbench. I used grade 8 1/4" bolts to mount them using only the center holes. It's a strong & rigid setup. I would definately buy these again for another application. I doubt these will ever wear out.

Heavy-Duty Casters That Work Smoothly and Install Easily
I bought the 920-pound kit for my Sjobergs Original 1900 with storage cabinet, and they work great. The bench weighs over 250 pounds, and these casters handle it easily. They roll very smoothly and raise and lower the bench effortlessly. Installation was straightforward, and the design makes them easy to engage and disengage. I replaced the included screws with new ones from Home Depot, and even then, a few of the screw heads still broke. Whatever screws you use, be careful while installing to avoid snapping the heads off. When I was shopping, I read reviews on other caster sets, including those sold by woodworking supply companies. Some people pointed out that their 400 lb rating isn’t always enough because that’s the combined weight capacity across all four casters. Since you’re engaging one caster at a time, the first caster can end up supporting nearly the full weight of the bench by itself. That’s why I went with this heavier-duty set, and I haven’t looked back.

Awesome caster set
The casters were easy to install. It was wonderful to have my heavy workbench glide over the floor (I was surprised). I have only had these a week - so far so good. When raised, they locked in place.

Screwdriver required
Casters worked perfectly on my shop table. As mentioned in other reviews the instructions are of little help and the mounting screws are not the best. I drilled 11/64 pilot holes and used a screwdriver rather than impact driver to seat them with no failures. Happy with the purchase and would order again.

Fantastic!
These work great on my heavy workbench!! I had my doubts; but I’m sold! Two minor complaints 1-the mounting screws seemed a little wimpy to me, so I used 3” lags. When I first wrote this review I complained that no instructions were included. As I was breaking down the box, I noticed that there was a tight fitting false bottom. In there were the instructions AND a drill template. So I need to modify my complaint. Please put the instructions and drill template in with the parts. But, even with no instructions, the picture in this as were sufficient to figure it out. Great product, came fast… time and usage will tell the whole story.
