Keeps my dog off grass, with a caveat
My puppy is a digger, and his pee was harming the grass, so we put a strip of this down and he will definitely avoid it. The caveat is he can jump over it, so we've got several strips of it somewhat haphazardly in the grass. The goal is to make it hard for him to merely sail over the strip; he has to stop and analyze things, which is a no-go when you gotta pee. The long-term goal is to make the grass all-around unappealing. (The yard has non-grass areas he can roam at will.) He does learn how to get around the spike strips so I have to keep him on his toes by moving strips periodically, but it has generally encouraged him way from the grass and toward the bark mulch where he can do his business without harming anything. I also bought a few pre-cut flat squares that I can just throw down over spots where he likes to dig. I don't have to anchor them: those work great and can be moved easily. The plastic "spikes" are not spiky enough to cause harm, just discomfort. It depends on the dog, though! Our puppy hates the sensation, but a foster dog we watched would just walk right over the spikes. She looked confused, but didn't ever learn to avoid them.

Spikey Mat
I used the Deterrent Mat to stop the neighbor's cat from using my garden bed as a litter box. The cat really liked the soft dirt under the lilac bush. After the Deterrent Mat was placed there, I noticed the cat sniffing it and then it moved on. So it is working great. I'm going to cover all the other enticing spots with the Mat.

Maybe?
So I lay this were the cat enters and exists. Will after a bet over a week, I found the cat in my yard, there kicking back, and staring right back at me, piecing my soul with its glare. I felt defeated... I especially felt more defeated after I remembered that I step in its fecal matter that was only lightly sprinkled with soil in my vegetable garden.. It didnt work, I believe the cat dogdes the spike; there too far spaced apart. So I am planning to cut another similar size and try to place it in between the space, making the spikes more crowded. Hopefully that works... 4 stars because I believe it still can work.

Cats won't walk on this mat
My cats were getting sick from eating my fern plant so I put this spike mat around the floor. I put rocks on it to make it lay flat. Aside from one cat who balanced himself on the window sill (blinds were down) to get to the plant, they will not walk on the mat. Not sure what I'll do long term as this is not a great look for my home but it does the job for now.

Works for my needs
My cat got out from under the gate when I had ivy netting on it. I changed the faux ivy to a lattice panel, but have it raised for the gate to open; possibly still allowing my cat to get out. I zip tied the spike strip to the bottom of the gate and this has worked. It will lay flat, but you need to lay something with some weight on it for a few days.I live in a humid area and the mat I keep under a table, for my pet to lay on, can get damp and moldy. I placed a spike strip, spikes down, allowing rain to drain and the mat to stay dry. Note: you cannot use this under a mat or rug for humans to walk on. It is too unstable.

Hard to mess with but does the job!
I did not like this like I thought I would. It's extremely hard to pin down and while this IS meant for outdoor use, (I believe anyways) I did use it for indoor use to keep my dog and cats out of my room that has no door. But although it was a pain in the ass to deal with, my pets have yet to cross it so I suppose it did it's job in the end.

It depends on your pet if it works or not.
We put this on top of our couch to keep our dogs from standing on it looking out the window. Our old dog, never bothered it. Our dog now, (1 yr) chewed it up enough we had to get rid of it for fear he would swallow the spikes. That is why I gave it a 3. Worked once, not now.

Very effective
I put a strip of these in front of one of the plants in my front yard because other dog owners let their dogs relieve themselves there and the plant was dying. We have "desert-scape" yards and the ground is covered with gravel around the plants, all prescribed by the HOA. So I cut a strip and covered it with gravel so they hardly feel it, just enough to make it unpleasant. The dogs are very smart. I don't want to hurt little paws, this is just a bit of a nuisance. I stood on it barefoot myself and it's just an unwelcome feeling and very effective to keep them away. Of course I would prefer if the neighbors used only their own yards for their dogs but until then, this is just necessary. It comes as a roll and it is very stiff though which makes it difficult to lie it flat.
