solid brass with hex heads wrench fasteners on both male and female. stainless clamp.
step 1: Cut old hose with a brand new sharp razor blade box cutter perpendicular to length of hose .step 2: Wrap loosely 3 inches of old hose end with black vinyl electrical tape.step 3: Place hose end on top of black surface in direct summer sunlight for a minimum of one hour to heat up the rubber tube.step 4: Use a file to taper the end of the male or female mender so it will slide more easily into a 5/8" hose.step 5: Place stainless steel clamp onto hose end.step 6: Lubricate the end of the male or female mender with WD-40 or similar product and twist while pushing forcefully into the hot pliable hose end.step 7: slide clamp an 1/8 inch away from male or female mender then tighten with either a large traditional flat head screwdriver or a 7mm hex head socket wrench till you feel resistance. Do not over tighten.step 8: Hit the extra clamp strap with hammer to bend it towards hose and then wrap with black vinyl electrical tape to prevent personal injury from sharp metal strap.step 9: Make sure there is a rubber seal between connections to prevent leaks.step 10: Before connecting hose, apply a liberal amount of silver anti seize paste onto threads of male or female mender to prevent corrosion which could lead to stuck connection between hoses and hose nozzle or between hose and spigot on house.step 11: Tighten connections by hand until you feel resistance. Do not over tighten.P.S. Never but aluminum menders. They will have a galvanic reaction with brass spigot or connector and will become stuck over time if you do not use anti seize paste.

The hose clamps are poor quality and strip when you tighten them
The fittings themselves look fine but when I installed one of the 1/2 males on a hose I was repairing, I was not able to tighten the hose clamp as much as I generally do, since it kept slipping/stripping out. I was a design engineer for 4 years and we used stainless steel hose clamps often. I don't remember ever having this happen, even when I tightened them far tighter than I did with this hose clamp. Of course the ones we used were made in the U.S. or were made in Japan to much higher specifications than these must be. The price is still good for the brass fittings so I will just buy some higher quality hose claps. I have not tried them all so maybe some are not this bad

These are the real deal
The local big box stores stopped carrying solid brass hose repair items. They carry light weight aluminum plated to look like brass or plastic ones that don't work well. And they charge more than the brass ones which will last for many years. We have a large yard and have hundreds of feet of hose. The factory ends are usually the weak point and for years I used solid brass repair kits to keep the hoses in service. When the hoses wear out I can still remove the used repair kits and re use them on another hose ( assuming my wife doesn't throw them away before I remove the fittings).

Great repair option
I have expensive hoses and sometimes they get in an argument with my lawn tractor. Lawn tractor wins and I need to repair a break in a 100 ft hose. These are high quality ends and I use ends because I now have length options you do not get with just a link repair. I have several 100 ft hoses and have repaired all the leaks with this kit and good quality washers. have 5 200 ft hose reels to cover all my yard. back in biz no leaks now!!

Worked great, but remember that brass means it'll leach lead.
My contractor used it to repair my hose. It is much better than having to buy a new hose and waste all that material. I highly recommend using this instead of buying a new hose. Also, the lead leaching is true of many garden hoses, which already come with lead connectors, so maybe no big deal.Sam SchaperowPsychologyCT.com

Works, but...
These work well enough but I only gave them 3 stars because the coupler is smaller than the hose clamp used to hold it on. This may not seem like a big deal but as soon as your hands get wet loosening and tightening the coupler is difficult. It’s difficult because the hose clamp gets in the way and gripping the coupler is near impossible. I recommend wearing gloves or keeping a tool handy when you need to uncouple your hoses with these hose ends.

Money saving
instead of paying 20-50 bucks for an expensive new hose, I used this to fix the leaking connector and the hose is back in use again. Will last another 5 years at least.
