Easy learning curve for a multi-function domestic sewing machine
I recently decided to revisit my old hobby of sewing. I had a perfectly okay Brother sewing machine but the more I was using it, the more I became conscious of the many functions that newer sewing machines have that mine definitely didn’t. Some of the features that I won’t be willing to do without that this machine has include snap-on/snap-off presser feet, making a switch from one stitch type to another a matter of seconds rather than minutes; a drop-in bobbin that removes the need to fiddle with the upper thread/needle to pull up the bobbin thread before starting to sew as well as virtually ending the common problem of the bobbin thread snagging inside the machine; a library of stitches that come pre-programmed with optimal stitch length and width… selecting a stitch always starts with the preferred default values every time you select it; a better design for the the upper thread loading. They have somehow designed the unit so that the thread will automatically find itself on the correct side of the path being threaded instead of, as my older machine needed, requiring me to fiddle with flywheel on the right of the machine to get the different parts in the correct orientation to pass the thread around the parts correctly.; a built-in overstitch stitch for fray-prone fabrics; and lastly, the option to either use the foot peddle to control the speed of the stitches or choose to use the programmable stitch speed control for those of us who find their excitement, anxiety, or simple lack of patience leading to what feels like a high-speed chase where your current stitches are the barely in control car careening around the mountainous ess-curves, inches away from flying off into the valley below. This machine is well made, well designed, and wonderfully lightweight. I think it is a great starter machine for those wanting to learn the skills and tricks of sewing.

Great little machine but for one thing
I made this purchase in an emergency situation. I was away from home and was working on a special quilt when my 36 year old Viking machine stop working. There was no hope in getting it repaired as I was told several years ago when I had it in for a minor repair that future repairs would be impossible because they could no longer get the parts. The computer portion of the machine had died. So my search brought me to this Brother machine which had good reviews. The machine is great and was easy to set up because it came with one of the best instruction books I have seen in a long time. Needless to say I got the quilt top done in time for the long arm quilter to do the machine quilting. Plus this will be my new travel machine because it weighs half of what my Viking did. I only have one complaint. It comes with a hard plastic cover for storage and I cannot get it to fit down over the machine like it should. If someone also has had this problem please tell me your solution to getting it to fit.

Nice upgrade
Nice upgrade from the Brother XM2701. Would recommend as an entry level machine that should get you years of good use. My old machine was still good but was very loud and missing some features that this machine has. Improvements and nice features: * Quieter (still makes a decent amount of noise, but I can listen to a podcast with this running at full speed and still hear the words, whereas my old machine would drown out the podcast) * Extension table * Free motion foot and ability to drop the feed dogs, great for quilting * Electronic selection of stitches. Automatically adjusts the needle position and other settings so you stitch right the first time. I like the stitch 43 for patchwork, which automatically gives you a 1/4" seam allowance from the right side of the presser foot. * Automatic buttonholes work great * Different decorative stitches * Ability to adjust the thread tension, stitch length, and stitch width Would I eventually like to upgrade to a fancy machine like a Bernina? Sure, but there's really no pressing need to right now since I own this machine. The benefits of a fancy machine would be things like more metal parts, longer support life, ability to oil the machine, etc.

Does not come with 1/4” seam guide presser foot
Loving this machine so far. Great price. My one issue is that it was listed as a great machine for quilting but did not come with a 1/4 seam guide presser foot. ALL quilts require an even 1/4 seam so you have 2 choices. Put a piece of tape to guide your seam or buy a 1/4 foot from Amazon, which I did. Works perfectly. I think the seam could be a fraction narrower, but if all seams are sewn consistently, finished product should be fine. There is a very basic tutorial for this machine on YouTube which I found very helpful.

Works great
Great machine for the money. I have pieced more than 15 quilts and it works beautifully. I have quilted about 10 baby quilts. It works great for that size, but I wouldn't try anything larger.

Great for beginners and experienced quilters/sewers
This machine was a much needed upgrade to my old machine. It comes with a helpful instruction manual as well as access to an app with a few tutorials. The stitching is excellent with all settings easy to use/change. It has a helpful speed changing feature. I really like this machine for my quilting and garment making needs.

So far it's been great especially with the YouTube video for this machine; for me seeing is easier than reading and the setting up tutorial is fantastic going step by step. Learning as i go with all the built in stitching available making it easier to use. Brother is a reliable machine and so far so good.
