Does shuffle, but user interface is undocumented so read on...
Advertised as having "shuffle play", the actual product has no such feature. Since the whole reason I purchased it was because it claimed to have this feature, I'd have to say that this is false advertising. Keep looking if you want a player that actually does what it claims.Update: After the reply from Claybox, I tried their undocumented procedure, hold Play for 3 secs and then a menu is presented. When I do this, after pressing Play for 3 secs it displays "ALL" but there is still no actual menu presented because the ALL doesn't change to anything else, aside from returning to displaying the chosen channel frequency. Perhaps they are using the term Shuffle in the noun form instead of the verb form of the word because it still does not shuffle tracks on the USB memory device. I have not tried an SD device yet but I have no reason to believe their claims of shuffling capability so my critique stands.Update 2: After the near worthless second response by avantek I did more experimentation and discovered how to get the device into Shuffle mode. Avantek did on their first reply tell me how to get into the Play Menu wherein the shuffle mode is available. However, they did not indicate how to manipulate said Play Menu, so while I could get the player to display the menu, I could not figure out how to change the settings. After much more trial and error I discovered how to do this so here is an addendum for you folks who buy one and what it to shuffle. To enter the Play Menu press and hold the play button for 3 seconds, the display will change with the word ALL displayed once you have entered the menu. Now the trick: once in the play menu, again press the play button and then select the next track (right pointing arrow button on the far right) and the display will then change to one of the other settings available, release both and again press and hold play while pressing the right arrow to get the unit to select the next setting in the menu. The settings displayed are as follows: ALL = play all in order, FOL = folder mode (don't know what it is, you try it...), ONE = play one track until you wear your ears out, RDM = shuffle/random mode (the one I wanted) Bear in mind the display cannot actually do an R, but instead will display a capital A, so it will show ADM when it means RDM (ya gotta love 1970's 7 segment technology...) So good luck.

VERY SIMPLE INSTALL AND IT WORKED PERFECTLY
Just received the FM Transmitter today. It took me all of 5 minutes to set-up (most of that time was taking it out of the box). Just used the buttons to set the frequency to 87.5 FM, then set the radio to 87.5 FM, plugged the audio cable from the IPOD to the audio in of the unit and voila ... worked great. No noticeable static or noise. (We did replace an existing unit, so all the cables, etc were already in place). When powered down, the Transmitter retains the frequency selected. The old unit still worked, but the display panel was tiny and on the side and impossible to read the display. I will update when I try the USB flash drive function with the Remote.UPDATE: 09/24/15 Received Kingston 16GB USB 2.0 Micro flash drive, copied all of our MP3's onto it and plugged it into this FM transmitter. It played songs without any problem and the remote worked just fine. VERY HAPPY WITH THIS UNIT.UPDATE: 11/11/15 We used the FM transmitter on a road trip (12hrs going and 12 hrs returning). It worked perfectly, including the use of the remote and the manual buttons on the unit. Absolutely no problems.UPDATE: 07/17/16 We stopped using this unit - NOTHING WRONG WITH IT - It has worked flawlessly for the last nine months. It is just that the configuration made it difficult to use one of the cup holders on the console between the front seats. It is the car configuration that made this a problem, not the unit itself. We purchased a different unit with a small "gooseneck" so the body of the unit could be located away from the cup holder. That has worked out much better for us. this is still a great little reliable unit.

Nice until it breaks
It worked for a while and was decent. It performed the functions that it said it would and I had no problem. After a couple months of using it the up/down swivel gave out and the main part of it just faced downward. That really didn't bother me though. At some point within about 10 months of use it completely stopped working. I changed the fuse in it and double checked that my cigarette lighter was still working (it was). This thing just broke and I cannot give an explanation as to why. It's a cheap piece of garbage now sitting in a landfill or blocking up some seagull's throat. None of these FM radio adapters seem to be that well made. I would happily pay for a quality piece of electronics, but there just don't seem to be any out there for this purpose. After the one I'm currently using breaks, I'll go give THAT piece of garbage a 1 star review and then buy another transmitter and so on until I finally die.

spectacular performance with a reasonable price.
I delayed this review awhile because this is the replacement for this first unit I purchased quit working about a week after I got it. after completing the return, I decided to give this product a second chance partly because I really liked the way it works and because it has received so many good reviews. I'm really glad that I did. this replacement works flawlessly. I've used fm transmitters in the past and never had such good reception and I've not had to change frequencies at all, after I set it on the first frequency I tried. I haven't tried using a memory card yet but will do so soon. If that has any issues I'll update here. The only possible issue I can see is if you have a small area where you power outlet is located because when this is plugged in it takes a couple inches to accommodate the wires. but I don't see that as being an issue with many vehicles. I would highly recommend this product to anyone that needs a device like this.

Simple mod improves reception
I bought one of these and was pretty happy with what I got for a tenner. However, I could hear a bit of a hiss in high frequencies which I thought might be due to poor reception. I soldered a 12" piece of wire to the antenna and left it hanging out of the side of the unit. Reception is much improved. You need: Jewellers' screwdrivers, soldering iron, solder and flux, spare piece of wire1. Remove the rubber pieces from both sides of the unit and throw them away (the one on the SD card side just gets in the way and we are going to use the hole it fixes to).2. Prise the face off the unit. There are 4 friction push connectors (one at each corner).3. Undo the 3 small screws holding the circuit board in place.4. There are 3 wires soldered to the board close to each other. These are labelled GND, ANT and +5V, reading from left to right. There is a strand of wire soldered to each of these and the 3 strands all disappear off into the 12V plug assembly. This is probably why reception isn't so good. The antenna sits inside a metal tube which is the car lighter socket.5. Solder the end of your wire to the middle connector marked ANT. You can leave the original wire connected. If you are unsure which of your connectors is the antenna, a good clue is that it won't be connected to the USB socket, but GND and +5V will be.6. Run the cable out of the hole which used to hold the rubber SD slot cover in place.7. Screw the board back into place.8. Push the face back on the unit.9. Test.

OK, but...
While it worked, it was okay - but it could be a little temperamental at times - hence the 2 stars. Certainly not a plug-and-forget item - at least, not in my experience. However - and this is true of all electronics - heat will kill it. Leave it in your car and it will cook. And when it cooks, it will die.To be fair, this is probably true of many cheap electronic devices you can think of, but for something that only has a value in the car is a pain.Another reason it is a bit of a faff.Yes, handy, but having discovered that my CD player can handle MP3s - burning a few CDs-worth of my MP3s is the way I intend to go rather than source another of these (or even another brand). Okay-ish, but I won't be buying another.

Good device for old style in-car-entertainment, no need to buy new stereo.
i was impressed with this FM Transmitter, point 1 - the device fitted nicely in cigarette lighter . 2 - the main body of the device with the usb socket can be adjusted so the usb stick isn't sticking out interfering with anything' 3. the device held the frequency well so didn't lose sound from my usb. 4. inexpensive gadget and good alternative if you have old style in car stereo, put lots of music on usb no need for cd's.For the price of packet of cigarettes you get a neat device. i recommend.

I have 2 of these and so far cannot get ...
I have 2 of these and so far cannot get shuffle play on either. I was advised by Avantek that one needs to press 'play' for 3 sec then choose shuffle, but I don't get the menu. So far I fear this is badly listed and needs revising. However, having spent several weeks reloading my various music files to microSD/SD/USB memory sticks (I have over 10 with various music genres) I have found out why my Transmitter would not work! It was because I had these cards/sticks formatted to NTFS and the transmitter software cannot read them! So I have re-formatted all my cards/sticks to Fat32 and they all work OK!!! There is free software to download from the Internet to re-format from NTFS to Fat32 and vice versa without losing any data(the one I found is called AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard Edition). Once domne all. repeat all, my music plays absolutely fine through this Avantek FM Transmitter. It really is brilliant and I am so pleased I have found the answer to the original problem! But, shuffle or random play is not available with all versions of Avantek, I can live without that so long as the music plays.

Does Exactly What it Says on the Tin!
Very useful little gadget, came ready to use complete with remote control and 3.5mm audio cable, and even a spare fuse. It's simple to use, plug into in the cigarette lighter socket and it automatically turns on when your switch on the car ignition, then, simply set the station you wish you use on your radio (I left mine at the default 87.5 FM), plug your phone/mp3/tablet (or USB flash drive/SD card) into it and boom; turns your ordinary car radio into an MP3 player at a fraction of the cost.Audio quality is great, nice clear stereo sound, can even charge your devices through the built-in USB port. Would recommend to anyone looking for a good, cost-effective solution to play their music library in the car.
