Some-what Happy Fish
I bought the Happy Fish V2.0 302 in 1 board for about $120 to install into my Marvel Superheroes Jamma cabinet. I'll start with the bad and end with the good, in bulleted format: The BAD: 1- No board mounting feet. I'm sure the Happy Fish will be fine just sitting taped to the wood in your cabinet, however, I don't want to leave it like that. 2- Becacuse these games are compressed into Flash memory, some things minor things are lost. This includes smoothe framerates on some games, stereo sound on others, and 2nd player features don't work on certain games. (2nd player will not work on the Willow game. Thankfully that game is awful and not worth playing.) 3- No installation instructions. None. There is a menu operation manual, which is 60% in Mandarin Chinese, and 40% English. My brother and I had to pick up some spare wire and study some online wire diagrams. After two days of effort, everything works fine. 4- Older games (pre-1993) run very poorly. Street Fighter 2 (Original) is HORRIBLE. It's like playing Street Fighter II on an SNES after you've been drugged for surgery. Bad MONO-phonic sound and slow. 5- The games and the game have NO WAY to setup "global" free play. So you have to either pump in coins or install a credit wire/button. The GOOD: 1- Some of my personal favorites run wonderfully; Street Fighter Alpha ZERO, Aliens vs Predator, Dark Stalkers 1 & 2, Marvel vs. Capcom 1 (no MVC2 on this board- damn), and Powered Gear. 2- Some of the issues due to compressing the games are forgivable issues. For example: Marvel Superheroes runs at speed, but the stereo sound is really poor. "PRO-TON CAN-NON!!" becomes "Proton Cannon". Metal Slug 1 & 2 run well, until you blow up something or cause a chain reaction explosion, then the sound crackles and sounds like someone forcing angry bees down a rabid honey badger's throat. (which is to say, "not good") 3- I am having a BLAST playing all of the games from the mid to late 90's, which run well mind you, and re-living some of my childhood. Also, I am getting a kick out of playing games that were never intended to be released in the USA. (Such as the Japanese version of "The Punisher" or "Powered Gear") 4- Since many of the arcades have gone out of business, you can pickup a jamma prepped arcade cabinet for $250 - 500 (US) and spend about $30 in parts, and about two days of time to setup the coolest home arcade around. I know that MAME systems are better, but I am having a blast with my current setup, MAME is my next challenge. (I WANT TO HAVE KILLER INSTINCT 2 IN MY ARCADE DARN IT!) All in all, this was a great purchase and has been a lot of fun.
