Has some wear, but strong enough to hold DSLR
The media could not be loaded. Nov 29 edit, againAdded a small portion video from my YT channel (wibWxOPuCns) filmed with the mount. This is a full DSLR mounted outside on the hood.-----Hi Amazon shoppers. My name is Anthony I've used this RAM mount for a year, daily, and it's still going strong.I've mounted small digital cameras (namely the Sony DSC W50 from 2006), digital audio recorders, and an entire DSLR with 35mm lens.I've mounted cameras on the inside of my car for an L.E.O. style dashboard camera (local news picked me up on it recently).I've mounted a DSLR with 18-55mm lens to the _outside_ of my car (door, hood, window) and other people's cars for a cinema style driving angle that lets you see us as we drive.I've left it in the hot Florida sun (in a car not direct sunlight) for hours.I've mounted it on a flat metal ceiling to so I could take a group photo with me in the photo (I don't get photos of me often as a photographer).Chances are your camera will break before the mount will, true story just ask me, so I had to use a DSLR as a dashboard camera for now. After a year of daily operation the paint finish is still bad but doesn't matter. The suction cup removal tab broke a long time ago but I remove the mount by twisting, not pulling. The inside of the suction has a small 20% cut but doesn't affect the exterior or the operation of the device at all. The main screwed on ball used to hold the arm to the base is worn from daily use a bit so it doesn't provide as much friction as it used to, but it still works and the ball is replaceable for about $10 but a year later and I don't plan on replacing the ball. The only times it came off during operation was when I realized I had placed the mount overlapping my car's UV screen which created a bump that let air out (rookie mistake, make sure the surface is completely flat, wood does not count) and when I hadn't inserted it fully. You can't half-butt it and expect wonders.I've read reviews on the Gecko mount and one of the complaints was lack of extra flap surrounding the base suction cup, whatever. Basically it ends with the mount itself so if it slips it can come entirely off. The RAM provides more safety so it can handle tough turns and bumps more. All my friends ask me if I would trust this little $35 thing with a +$350 DSLR camera, I would, and have, for a year. If you have those GoPros and their low weight, you're definitely better off than my operation.RAM also sells extra modular accessories so if you want to mount your camera to a bar of a motorcycle you're only ~$15 away versus buying a specialized all in one unit. If you want to mount your phone, can of soda, or GPS unit, same story. My only compliant was a year ago when I had to pay $35 for the mount, but one year later, hours of road footage recorded, a couple cinema style clips recorded, five anime conventions and countless questions and compliments from friends, and strangers, and one TV broadcasted interview with the local news station, I can only say in the DSLR wielding adventure I've had that this must be the most notable $35 I spent.RAM mount also makes a double and triple suction cup mount. If just one can handle a DSLR, I'd love to get my hands on the triple mount. Take that and a GoPro and chances are your window or GoPro will get damaged before your mount does.Buy American (National Products RAM Mount is made in USA), be there, and keep recording my friends.

Rock solid heavy-duty mount! However, it clicks and rattles. Minor modification required
RAM Suction Cup base with Tripod mount RAM-B-166-202AUI purchased this for use with my Sony HDR-AS10 Action Cam as well as other cameras that use the standard tripod mount. Also, the 1" ball system allows for customization with other RAM mounting accessories. I swapped out the suction cup for a V-base clamp to use on my bicycle. The suction cup design is heavy-duty and rock solid. The large twist lock makes it easy to mount or dismount from a smooth surface. The only complaint I have is that it uses 2 sheet metal screws to attach the ball to the suction cup. It would have been nice if there was an integrally molded setup. The arm is adjusted using a single twist knob. There is an internal spring that keeps some pressure, but I found one end would always loosen a lot faster than the other. I recommend keeping this end on the base side and the tighter end for your camera/device to facilitate faster base changesThe entire mount assembly isn't too heavy or bulky, but it is large enough to prevent my AS10 from being mounted upright on my windshield. I had to use the AS10 upside down. The positive aspect is the twin ball joints allows for a great deal of flexibility for orienting your devices. Once tightened, the arms are extremely solid and steady. It puts GoPro's, Sony's, and Arkon's mounts to shame.Overall: 5/5 stars, awesome flexibility in configuration choices and mounting options. I'd like to see a more integrated base option just like the V-base clamp where the ball assembly is part of the base and not attached with 2 sheet metal screws. That said, everything is solid. I used this on my dashboard with a Sony AS10 action camera and didn't hear a peep out of the mount.UPDATE:27 APR 2013I started noticing a rattling noise which I attributed to my car, the Sony Action Cam, or the suspension. I installed some compression strips on the Action Cam that eliminated all of its rattling. I tried several different cars and heard the same rattling. That is when I noticed the suction cup mount rattles! When you remove the 2 screws to separate the ball mount from the suction cup, there's a metal pin in the cam lock mechanism. Push that pin out to reveal another pin when the cam is removed. That pin is loose and rattles around. I thought about just removing it entirely as it doesn't really do anything other than push against the bottom of the cam. Instead, I used some Permatex Black Max (some heavy-duty super glue) in the 2 pin holes and re-inserted the pins. This way, neither pin will rattle around and it still allows full functionality. I still do not like the 2 stainless screws holding the base together, the base should have brass inserts to allow a much better retention system.

You can't go wrong with RAM mounts.
This is a heavy duty camera mount. I would not be worried putting my Sony A7 on it.Aluminum build quality and strong suction helps produce stable footage compared to plastic mounts. If you don't want to waste money testing a number of mounts you can't go wrong with RAM mounts.

Strong and reliable
I use this mount all the time and can say it's super strong and has great suction. I've used both on the inside and outside of my car and am 100% impressed.

Good match for my Olympus mirrorless camera
I use this with my Olympus E-PL5 mirrorless camera. The Olympus 15mm "body cap" lens + my E-PL5 + this RAM mount makes a perfect combo for dash cam and other similar action video. The camera is not waterproof or dustproof like a GoPro so some caution is needed when using it with the mount, but otherwise it works perfectly. The mount is very stable and the suction mount is very strong, although I still tether the camera to the car when in use... don't want any nasty surprises! The mount has never come loose since I've been using it.
