The Sands of Time

It's like 4 novels in parallel, so keeping track of their interacting characters is challenging. The degree of the reader's enjoyment of the novel is proportional to that reader's ability to keep the mingled novels straight. A challenge, but very much worth the effort!

I find all of Sydney Sheldon's books to be quite captivating.

As of all books written by Sydney Sheldons, each story as this one keeps your interest going throught the book. The subjects in this book switched with amazing turns. I recommend reading it.

Very entertaining. This novel has good ending except for few characters. It’s actually enjoyable to read about all characters with their history for each.

Great story. This is a re-read for me. I loved the story line. Being a European I felt so close to the characters.

I enjoyed the Sheldon book more than several of his others. You will like this one if you like interesting characters.

I sincerely enjoyed this book. Each character had its own personality and I didn't want to put the book down. I really loved the ending. I have read many of Sidney Sheldon's book and I feel he is a very good writer. He always has some sort of suspense and drama in every story.

This thriller centres around four nuns in Spain and their unwitting involvement with outlawed Basque nationalists and the Spanish Army. Sheldon uses many twists and turns in this dramatic work. There is a nun there who should not be a nun. It is a thriller and a good example of understanding the political problems of Spain. Unlike politics which can be dour at time, Sheldon peppers it up so that most people, after reading this book, would want to become nationalists.

民族紛争に揺れるスペインが舞台、とシェルダン作品ではちょっと変わった設定。トリック・どんでん返し度は他作品に比べてそれ程でもないのですが、それでもバスク・テロリストと修道女たち、それからスペイン警察の追跡劇はなかなかのハラハラ度で、最後まで読者を引っ張る力量はさすが。面白い部類に入るでしょう。

バスク解放のために戦うテロリストの脱出劇に四人の修道女が巻き込まれ、テロリストたちとスペイン警察や軍から逃げ回ることになる。修道院で暮らす間は、沈黙の教えを守り、お互いの顔さえまともに見たことのない修道女たちだったが、それぞれには、修道院に入るまでの波乱万丈の人生があり、長年の修道院暮らしから抜け出した女性は、過去の人生経験に基づき、逃亡劇に対応して行く。　過去の人生の部分は読み応えがあるが、一つのストーリーへの収束はなく、オムニバスで終わってしまったような感じがします。　読みやすさや面白さは、さすがにシンディー・シェルダンです。

今まで読んだシェルダンの作品はきらびやかな大都会が舞台で登場人物は金と権力を奪い合うようなストーリーでしたがこの本は少し毛色が違っていました。スペインからの独立と言う理想を掲げて戦う武装闘争集団メンバーと４人の修道女のスペイン縦断旅行の物語です。家族を殺され復讐に燃えるＥＴＡリーダーのJaime Miroの個性的なキャラクターが生き生きと描かれていて引き付けられました。イベント会場で自分の指名手配ポスターを発見しても少しも慌てる事なく記念に持って帰るところや軍資金の為に銀行強盗をいとも簡単にやってのけ犯罪とは無縁の神に仕える修道女が惚れ込んでしまうところなど痛快でした。特に興味深く感じられたのは４人の修道女の生い立ちや修道院に入るまでの光と陰、危険な冒険旅行を共にする事になったＥＴＡメンバ−である男性を警戒しながらも徐々に打ち解け恋愛に発展するまでの心の動きでした、さすがシェルダン心理描写が上手いなと思いました。
