Long Knife: A Novel

Didn't know what to make of this account, (like or dislike), so gave it a middle-of-the-road rating. The first chapter really pulled me in, and I was set for a page-turner, but unfortunately the story bogged down to a stand still that went beyond the half-way mark. I was tempted to give it up numerous times. The book did seem to be well researched, and that is what kept me going; the authors attention to detail. I especially liked one detailed description of a pristine forest of the era. (Ala James Fenmore Cooper in LAST OF THE MOHICANS). I really couldn't understand the authors unrealistic portrayal of Clark as a saintly super-hero. He really turned him into an unrealistic romantic figure with no flaws, but this could have been part of a philosophical tale of mans fate after his glory days. Could it be we are all not what we think we are? Perhaps we all over-rate ourselves. Despite it's flaws, it did turn out to be a worthwhile read.

This book is an inspirational and moving account of the life and exploits of George Rogers Clark, the hero of Vincennes to say the least. Containing many actual letters and a thorough accounting of his endeavors which eventually won for our fledgling nation the "Northwest Territory", including, the state Clark (and I) called home. I have never read a historical book whose characters seemed so real, I wept bitterly at the hero's death in the end. Clark was a treasure to our country and a true hero in an age when such stood, literally, head and shoulders above the rest, I feel a deep sense of pride that his exploits are celebrated in this state where some occurred, even as a replica of his own home stands within our borders, on a bluff overlooking the Ohio River. I would recommend this book to any fan of history or of a character sketch of what a truly extraordinary person is told with deep richness and humanity. George Rogers Clark is no longer just a name from the pages of history to me. You will not be sorry you've read this book.

I grew up in Vincennes , IN , the home of the George Rogers Clark Memorial. When I saw this book about him I was interested to read it for that reason and because I found an ancestor in my genealogy research that served with him. Needless to say, Gen. Clark was indeed a hero and a great leader. However, he truly sacrificed his personal life and reputation for our freedom. Glad I read this.

George Rogers Clark was great man whose fascinating life has been under the radar for too long. Author Thom has really brought him to life and made me appreciate the pioneer/frontier lands and people. I do not ordinary read historical accounts so this was out of my usual interest, but well worth it.

George Clarks history is probably the most interesting thing I've ever come across. You will fight with him, hunger with him, and adventure with him in this book. Between this novel and Thoms other novel titled "Sea to Shining Sea" I've become a huge lover of the Clark family. This summer I'm actually planning a trip with my grandparents to visit George Clarks memorial in Indiana. This is a story that will stick with you for the rest of your life.

I had the pleasure of going to the GRC Memorial this past August. Having gone to grade school just a few miles from there I had to visit a part history I had learned in my youth but could barely comprehend its significance until nearly 43 years after merely learning his name. This is great rendering of the history of GRC and his brilliant campaigns of the early northwest. This book shed new light on the life of GRC his forgotten contributions to the founding of our great country!

This is the story of George Rogers Clark not to be confused with one of his brothers, William Clark. William of Lewis and Clark fame did the surveying and mapping of uncharted territories from the Mississippi west to the Pacific Ocean. George had much to do with saving the Ohio territory over to the Mississippi for the future of the United States. He did so with very few men and resources and almost without shedding much blood. As you read you would think this a fairy tale or more fiction than truth. But the author has provided his resources to verify this story and pointed out where he did take some liberty to enhance the book.
