A Specialty Item That Does What It's Meant To Do
When you have a pair of good leather shoes, with leather soles, the edges of the soles get scuffed. For years I just used shoe polish to cover those scuffs. It really isn't very durable, though. I don't polish my shoes that often; usually a little brush action takes care of scuffs on the uppers. This Edge Dressing is purpose-made for these scuffs. It's a very runny liquid, and the cap has a cotton-ball dauber built in. When my shoes are scuffed, I put them on a bench, and rub the dauber around the edge of the soles. I wipe off the excess with a rag or paper towel, and within a moment or two the liquid has soaked in and dried off.A niche product, to be sure. But I have very narrow feet and have to wear expensive shoes. My goal is to never have to buy shoes again; just have the ones I have re-soled when they wear out. Edge Dressing helps keep my shoes looking good, which matters when I'm trying to get 30 more years out of a pair.

The finishing step
I came across Feibing's Leather Sole & Heel Edge Dressing in my search for a product that would help restore the black synthetic heel and outsole on my daily Oxfords. This product is basically a water-based dye that is easy to apply, but can also be very messy if one isn't careful. Drips are easy to clean off hard surfaces, but it will quickly stain any fibrous materials so it's in one's own interest to lay out some newspaper around the work space.I found that applying a single, wet, and even coat gives better results than if the product is used as instructed. Because it's water-based, it takes about 10-15 minutes to dry completely and the product will run in the meantime if applied wet. If the smooth surface layer of the rubber outsole has not worn off, the dressing will leave a semi-glossy finish. If the rubber wall has been scuffed, rashed, or worn off, then it will just darken it.The effect that can be achieved can be seen in the accompanying photos. Photos to the left of the bottle picture were taken before the application of Fiebing's Dressing and photos to the right of the bottle picture were taken afterwards. The last picture shows a dried run and how well the dressing darkens a weathered rubber sole. The dressing generally lasts the time between polishes if one doesn't go out of his way to stomp in puddles or kick piles of dirt. I haven't tried this stuff on leather soles. Overall, this is a good product that helps hide unsightly rub marks to give a shoe the nice finishing touch.

Fiebing's Leather Sole & Heel Edge Dressing
My last bottle lasted me about 20 years and worked vert well. This bottle of the same product seems much thinner and drips on the floor quite a bit. I have to put a rag on the floor, now, to catch the drippings.
