Good balance, size and quality.
Solid, balanced and rugged. Bought this when I read about that P.o.S. in Arkansas that attacked the family of hikers. I’m a former Army Ranger, so still very much in the habit of scanning for weapons in any situation. No need to scan anymore while hiking or camping with the family. I was looking for something that can easily and discreetly fit into a camelback This will do just fine.

Awesomeness in an axe
Perfect. The axe is well balanced, a great size, and incredibly perfect for outdoors. For those waiting for the zombie apocalypse, this may not be your first choice in tools. You undead enemy would have to be way too close for comfort. For those looking for a great outdoor tool, this is well made, solid, and will do the job.

An awesome war tomahawk--tactical and practical
SOG always makes incredibly high quality items. This tomahawk is no exception. I've been throwing it for a few days and even after it hit a nail that was buried in my plank it only suffered a tiny ding, which I ground out with a diamond sharpener. Now the top edge is a little more rounded, which makes it even better for throwing. It is well balanced and the pommel is also really tough. I like the heft of it. My husband chucked it into an old stump and it went in about two inches. Had to use a crowbar to get it out. I've got other hatchets for cutting/splitting wood but this one would work well enough for any of those applications as well. It can really take a beating and the grip is super comfortable.

Good blend of tactical and tool use
I purchased this to be a backup emergency tool in my truck and for occasional use camping, hiking, etc. For the price it's a fantastic tool. It's relatively sharp right out of the box, is balanced well, and seems to be well made. I didn't see any tooling marks or other manufacturing defects evident - everything was locked tight. I was surprised by the lightness of this hawk. It has a polymer handle and the head and balancing weight are affixed to the handle. The handle is wrapped with a ribbed grip near the counterbalance and a metal protective shield near the top so any missed swings won't shatter the handle (your appendages not so much). The balance point is a couple of inches toward the head from center which makes swing and recovery swift and easy in a tactical situation, but not quite as ideal for use as an axe (to be expected). In a throwing test the head rotated easily and I was able to stick it in target repeatedly with no evidence of wear or stress on the head. Bear in mind that this hawk is NOT designed as a throwing axe, but can be used as one if needed. For my needs this tools is great. It will work for light camping needs, defensive needs, and emergency situations. Would I want to use it to protect myself from a zombie horde? No. Would it repel a carjacker - sure. The sheath is OK. Wearing it on the belt is not ideal as trying to put it back in one-handed is difficult. I used it as a base to fashion a mount for it on the center console of the truck and it is perfect for that use. It also would be great to protect the blade (and your stuff) if the hawk is in a pack or bag of some kind. It's a little utilitarian, but it works. The only downside - and the reason for losing one star - is the ribbed handle. Out of the box it was a little slick and made me feel less than positive about the grip. Add a little moisture - water or sweat or whatever - and it becomes downright scary. I rubbed a little dirt in to the handle and that did the trick. I suspect with a little more use the handle will break in well and this issue will become a moot point. For now, however, it is the only thing that detracts from this tool for my intended purpose.

It will do what you need it to do
I don’t normally write reviews but this is awesome. The head of the axe the spike and the cap at that end of the handle are all three solid points of impact capable of doing damage. The whole thing has a sturdy unbreakable feel to it. It would work for any application you could possibly need a tomahawk for

Great tomahawk for firefighters/first responders. Great value in a survival hawk.
When I bought this hawk I already owned a SOG FastHawk, which I had bought primarily as a throwing hawk which it excels at. I was interested in the longer cutting edge, more aggressive bottom "hook", and pommel on the VooDoo hawk as a fighting/survival hawk and to see if it could be thrown as easy as the FastHawk. The hawk cuts well right out of the package although a little sharpening greatly improved this and I did reshaped the contour on the piercing point to increase penetration, all in all about 30 minutes work with a stone and file. The hawk throws well, after you get used to the pommel sliding thru your hand and removal of the pommel, quite easy, improved this ability but unless throwing is your primary use for this hawk I'd leave it on as it provides for a much more secure grip when performing other jobs with it. This hawk is almost indestructible with over 300 throws into and against the butt end of a 26" log, not all of them stuck as intended, with no loosening of the handle or damage to the blade. The short handle makes it easy to pack in almost any method you choose and still provides striking power for any job you would choose this type of tool for. It chops well and pierces both cinder blocks and steel doors with ease and will take out a car window with one good tap. The only "con" i have is the sheath, which protects both the blade and you quite well, is unuseable one-handed without risking injury. I still gave the hawk 5 stars because I didn't buy it for the sheath. There are aftermarket sheaths available if you require one-handed capability. I'm a retired firefighter with 28 years of service and 18 years of service as a LEO in various capacities. I highly recommend this hawk as an addition to any firefighters utility belt, manys the time I could have used it and having this tool in a squad car could save many lives on emergency scenes where minor extrication is needed fast and the police arrive first, and they almost always do.

Where She Going This Time?
As far as tomahawks go...this one is a beauty. It came razor sharp...and super polished. Just don't try and throw it unless you're an expert. The pummel at the bottom of the handle catches on my fingers as I release it...thus sending the hawk flying off in all kinds of directions but the one I intended. EDIT: 2017-12-24. Was using the tomahawk today and the head sheared off at the first rivet. The steel inside was of a different consistency on each side of the rivet. Currently awaiting help from Amazon to see if SOG will repair and/or replace this hawk using its "Limited Lifetime Warranty". More to follow....

My go-to tomahawk
I use this product all the time for splitting wood (small stuff c'mon this aint an ax) and other odd cutting jobs I need done. I never go backpacking without it. Its probably heavier than some alternatives but totally worth the weight in my opinion. Excellent quality and life. I keep a metal file in my camping stuff and just clean up the edge before going on a trip. Holds an edge well and does a good job.
