Norwegian Verbs And Essentials of Grammar Review: A must if you're using self-teaching methods instead of taking a formal class. - This book has been one of the best purchases I've made so far in my quest to learn Norwegian. Self-teaching with all of the various modern methods available (language learning apps, flashcard apps, Pimsleur audio books) has been great, but virtually every method I've been using left me feeling like I was missing crucial lessons in grammar. Apps such as Duolingo in particular teach you vocabulary in a vacuum, with virtually no explanation of the grammar rules behind the phrases and sentences you are learning. Perhaps skipping the grammar or figuring it out via context clues works for some people, but for me, that does not cut it. Adding this book to my arsenal immediately helped my comprehension and stopped me from wasting time being confused about things I would see in one of my apps, or hear in a Pimsleur lesson. Some concepts, like personal pronouns, were just not clicking with me even a tiny amount, no matter how many example sentences were presented to me. As soon as I read the personal pronouns chapter in this book, I fully understood them and felt ready to move forward using Norwegian pronouns. This book is very thorough. It gives you the 'technical' grammar explanation and then follows it up with numerous examples to reinforce the usage in practice. I also really like the quick reference guide for verbs in the back of the book, which gives you all the most commonly used Norwegian verbs in a table, each with infinitive, present, past and future tense. Obviously you need to have a pretty strong comprehension of English grammar in order to use this book (if you don't know what infinitive, definite, participle, etc mean, this won't help you much). But that's clearly true of any foreign langauge grammar book. I guess there probably exists somewhere a very simplified Norwegian grammar book, and if your grasp of English grammar and grammatical terms is not fairly strong, you should probably seek out something simpler. Review: The Best Around, Pretty Much... - Okay... so if your "learning" style consists only of popping a CD in and listening while you paint your toenails or watch a football game (and you have an extra 8 to 10 years to learn a language in this fashion), this is not the book for you! However, if you're not a fan of the so-called "modern" approach, and if you are not afraid to think, and if you believe that learning a language actually takes effort on your part, and if you would like to really get to know the language and how it functions, and if you would like to speak/write with your own sentences (that you made up all by yourself!!!)... well, great! This is a WONDERFUL book for you. Unfortunately, the modern trend in language learning is to treat us all like children. We are not children, and many of us don't want to spend the eight years or so which it takes to reach proficiency using that approach. This book will bridge the gap and give you the details/structure that most of the other course books are afraid to include. It's very organized. And even better, it doesn't get carried away with minute detail as some grammar books tend to do. At the same time, it is thorough enough so that you won't have a bunch of unanswered questions and incomplete concepts. It's a very logical progression and there are plenty of examples. You know, if this book had vocabulary lists with recorded pronunciation, lots of written exercises/translations, about 10 CD's of realistic/native spoken dialog with transcription, oral repetition/exercises, and a good Leitner-System-based flash card software application... well, wouldn't life be grand? Great text for learning Norwegian
This little book does a good job of teaching basic Norwegian grammar principles to those learning from English.

Solid, but sloppy
This is a solid primer on basic grammar, enough to help beginners get by. However, it's not without its problems. The chapter on conjunctions is a mess--the examples are mixed up and don't follow the cited conjunction. The prepositions chapter is insufficient. The translations don't consistently align with the definitions of words, especially conjunctions and prepositions. The book is missing essential comparatives (as...as and similes). Many of the verbs cited in examples do not appear in the verb glossary at the back. This doesn't include the basic typos that afflict all books these days that are rushed to print without attentive editing by a human. I can make do with this book because I already speak several languages and know what I'm doing. First-time learners will experience frustration. Hopefully the author/editor will clean everything up and come out with a substantial revision.

The Best!
Okay, I ordered everything I could, and opened this one up last, my mistake! EXCELLENT book, not only does it go through the verbs, but in the very section/divisions there are fantastic learning ops with the examples. Eg: if you want to know how to work adding an adjective to a noun you don't get just a "rule" with one example. You get many examples, each with a new set of A/Noun combinations, with a translation beside it, so you are absorbing many new words at the same time as learning the grammar principal. I think it is the best and most contemporary learning tool out there for AMERICAN english. Most of the books and CDs are from Enland/english, which is sometimes a problem. "sink" vs. "basin", sweater/jumper, etc. This is the one book along with a pocket dictionary I will travel with for my extended trip to norway this summer. Ha det bra!

Simple and compact
A great reference for Norwegian grammar. I'm using it as a complement to DuoLingo.

un des rares livres proposant un panorama complet de la grammaire norvegienne. Tout juste indispensable et bien fait dans son ensemble.

Muy útil como complemento a algunas app u otros libros de texto. Por si solo puede resultar un poco difícil ya que es no esta pensado para una clase como los Ni i Norge o På Vei
