Staying Alive (1983)

I watched Saturday Night Fever on prime yesterday and aside from the music and dance sequences didn't care for the rest of the movie. I read Staying Alive was its sequel so I gave it a look see.WOW!!! So majorly cheesy with an abundance of bad acting and sometimes clunky dancing with the exception of Travolta and Rhodes most of the time. But of course the early 80s had many dance scenes in movies of the theatrical and over the top variety due to Fame and the current music videos of the time.I laughed quite a bit as the actors were so earnest and utterly serious in their craft... haha... Dance... dun dun.... into the FIRE!!! Some of the dancing was pretty great but the theatrics just made me chuckle at the cheesy execution of the moves. Travolta barely smiles cuz he is so serious about arriving in his dance aspirations.You will know Rhodes from Dirty Dancing. She sings in this movie and not too bad. If you like movies brimming with cheesiness than this is right up your alley.

I grew up on this stuff and whether it's bad acting, cheesy moves/dialogue or even the fact that the plot is almost the same as Saturday Night Fever, i still love it because for me, it's nostalgic! .....Of course Saturday Night Fever was my all time FAV, and always will be, This movie is still a great one in my book! ....Loved loved loved Cynthia Rhodes, she's so beautiful in this movie. I knew when i watched Dirty Dancing, that i knew her from somewhere! ....Thanks for the movie, I love it!! <3

I have seen this movie many, many times and I liked everything about it! The dancing was incredible especially Cynthia Rhodes, and John Travolta and Finola Hughes were great as well. I even liked Steve Inwood as the Director. The music was awesome!!!!! When I looked at the full cast, I recognized Janet Jones and MIchelle Johnston as also being cast in A Chorus Line (also fine dancing)!

Sly Stallone has never been a great director...but at least he tried with the follow up of "Saturday Night Fever".. John Travolta is a hell of a dancer in his youth and Prime.. His supporting cast were terrific .."trained dancers" of their generation.. Some of the music was okay...but they could have brought in another song writer and singer to sing for the movie. Frank Stallone recorded the music and sang..but he's not the greatest of singer's.. I guess when you have a brother who's a world famous Actor,producer and screen writer.. Your hired on the spot for a movie soundtrack.. John Travolta ..whether you like him Or not he's got the moves ..and that body for a Tall guy.. !! I love the choreography in the film..yes Jazz dance and Ballet aren't very popular in 2020.. It's still a legitimate art form.. What I was disappointed in was ..that the actor who played John Travolta's dad in the "S.N.F" wasn't cast or the brother ? What about some of the former cast mate's..In the film he walks back to Brooklyn and he strolls by the famous club where he made a name for himself..The hotel were he stayed has been demolished ...This movie is a look at what it was like for anyone moving to NYC and wanting to learn intermediate dance and praying for a chance in a major show... I certainly recall the days ...traveling around the country.. Dancer's have to pay their dues ..if you wanna make it..

I watched Saturday Night Fever just before I watched this. I had never seen Stayin' Alive before because of the horrible reviews. I wish I had skipped it. The storyline is non-existent, nothing like Saturday Night Fever which any young man growing up in a lower Middle class neighborhood in any American city could relate to-trying to better themselves but caught up in the daily life of risk-taking, gangs and promiscuity. The sequel was SO bad. They obviously just tried to ride on the coattails of Saturday Night Fever. Sorry-didn't catch them. Finola Hughes is such a wretched person that I cannot figure out what Travolta's character sees in her. Look like he hasn't matured at all except for the dancing. Whether you like disco or not, the Puerto Rican couple in the dance contest in Saturday Night Fever far outshined anyone in the sequel. Don't bother.

I am a big fan of Saturday Night Fever so I was excited to see the sequel. Oh what could have been. Sylvester Stallone took over the directing duties in this movie and made it a positive story instead of the gritty but realistic tone the original script had. Gone is Annette and the Gang and Tonys mom is the only character from the original. I hate but like this movie only because it's so awkwardly done. Kudos to Frank Stallone for finally getting a hit single thanks to his bro. Haha. All in all this movie is one guilty pleasure with awkward dialogue and a cheesy god awful Broadway show called Satan's Alley. Ah Stallone, SMH

I finally saw this movie after many years of seeing only Saturday Night Fever. This is the sequel from that movie and although it is not an Oscar winner, John Travolta as his role as Tony continues with him becoming very serious about dancing. He really works at it and you can tell that John Travolta did some serious practicing for this role (about 1 year from what I read in IMDB). Anyway, his character still has growing up to do and perhaps it finally pushed him over the edge to grow up.. Of course he had to do his strut to the tune of Stayin' Alive by the BEE GEES. And evidently that is what kept him alive for this movie. lol

I never saw this movie before, but I'd heard so much about it, I finally clicked the purchase button to rent it for $4. While it was great to see Travolta in his prime and to see another movie with Rhodes in it, the dated dance style, my lack of enthusiasm for the BeeGees and the sad stage settings kind of killed for me what other people see as the movie's strongest suit. This movie and Flashdance play right into the "hot skilled young talent breaking into the big city and win" category, but somehow they managed to diverge completely on the quality and believability of the plot. Of course, all of this is purely subjective, but this movie just didn't hit the right notes for me.

It is an interesting concept - a dance sequel to Saturday Night Fever directed by Sylvester Stallone. Unfortunately, the good points end there. Not a patch on the original. The dancing is much worse. The story is not that interesting. Good ending, though.

The dvd was ok but would not play towards the end kept pixalating which was annoying as i entended to give as a gift but watched to see that it was working ok and found out that it did not.

Great songs on the disc, , looked like new when they wee delivered ,Takes me back to my final year at school ,

this item was exactly as expected and plays well i am happy.

Great follow up from Saturday Night Fever.
