Simple guide to start raising monarchs
The media could not be loaded. I released over 100 monarch butterflies this (my first) year raised from eggs and caterpillars found on milkweed in the wild. Was able to video hatching eggs, chrysalis construction and development, and emerging butterflies. Having this book on my iPad was a godsend. The project was quite a hit with the grandkids as well as my friends.

A Must for Monarch Information
This is the best book I have come across that is packed with great photos and useful information. My six year old granddaughter and I just raised 22 monarch caterpillars to the chrysalis stage. We referred to the book often. It offers suggestions if you look for your own monarch eggs or caterpillars, tips for "nurseries", how to feed the caterpillars, and even what to do if a chrysalis falls or needs to be reattached elsewhere (use dental floss or glue). Since many of our caterpillars made a chrysalis on the underside of milkweed leaves, we relocated several by tying them with dental floss. It even shows how to tell if the chrysalis is male or female along with the difference on the butterflies. I'm happy I purchased this book!

A wonderful guide for how to raise monarchs
This is a wonderfully detailed guide on how to raise monarch butterflies. It's appropriate for adults as well as kids and contains extra information that helps you understand the life cycle of the monarch. I purchased this while doing research for my own book ( The Monarch: Saving Our Most-Loved Butterfly )and found it to be so good that I recommended it in my resource section. Amazon often recommends purchasing this book paired with mine and I have to agree - the two of them together pack a punch of monarch information for a fabulous price. Well done, Carol Pasternak!

although after purchasing several books about these wonderful creatures, I have found this book the best ...
This is listed as a kids book, although after purchasing several books about these wonderful creatures, I have found this book the best of them all. Maybe I am a kid at heart, the explanations of care, feeding, travel and life cycle is so thoroughly explained and the pictures and illustrations are fantastic. I highly recommend this book to "kids" of all ages, 4 years to 100 years old. The best I have found! Thank you for this amazing book! I am sure to share it with my grandchildren, as I have now involved the entire family in my love of the monarch butterflies!

Great photos
I know this was written for children, but I started taking care of Monarchs in my yard and I wanted the basics with photos so I would know what to do. This book filled the bill, great photos and it covers all stages of the egg to the butterfly and all the problems you might encounter.

How To Raise Monarch Butterflies: a Step-by-Step Guide for Kids
This book is FANTASTIC!!!The step-by-step guide is for ANYONE (not just kids) interested in helping to increase the Monarch population.I didn't realize until I read the book, that only 1 in 100 Monarch eggs in the wild survive to to become a butterfly. There are actual photos (not artwork / drawings) that are terrific and very helpful in following the step-by-step guide. The text in the book is easy to understand for either kids or adults, while not talking down to adults (I am over 50).I bought the book in June and have so far already raised and released six (6) Monarch butterflies (3 - females and 3 - males) with more in various stages of growth.Yes, the book even shows you how to determine the sex of the Monarch butterfly. To raise Monarchs from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly has been a lot of fun and a great learning experience for me.I highly recommend this book, How to Raise Monarch Butterflies: A Step-by-Step Guide for Kids (How It Works) by Carol Pasternak.

Very informative, thorough, nice tones for young readers, stunning photography. It will grab you!
My children, husband and I have been raising and releasing Monarchs for two years now. How I wish I had had this resource when we started! Carol's book is a delight to the brain, the eye, and the heart. It is not only well-written and informative; it is wonderfully organized and absolutely beautifully laid out. It is hard to have a book that is both a quick, satisfying read AND a thorough and easy resource to look back on again and again. Carol has accomplished this. The text is both fun and efficient--perfect for children and even adult beginners. My eldest daughter, who is in early elementary, devoured the book on sight (after wrestling it away from me!) Once they get a small taste, your children (and you!) could easily get hooked on this easy and incredibly satisfying "hobby." Carol will lead your family through the way graciously and thoroughly. And that's just the text and knowledge...if those don't blow you away, the photography will. Many of the shots are taken by the author and her family; she credits the photos taken by others. These are some absolutely amazing images, laid out so nicely. Simple, thought-provoking and inspiring.Once your children have feasted on the thorough but easily digested text and the gorgeous pictures, they'll get a taste of why this "hobby" is so important to their environment and, in all mushy honestly, to their hearts as well. Why collect, raise, and release Monarch butterflies? Many answers, surprising facts, and thoughtful ideas await your family. It'll open your children's hearts to nature and the environment as well, and leave them wanting more--and wanting to do more. Please consider adding this book to your collection (or your children's collection!) in the interest of Monarch butterfly conservation, or just plain old-fashioned science fun and awe. It's a window to the magic and simplicity of nature and a wonderful tribute to the gentle and mystifying Monarch butterfly.

Very basic, more of an outline
If you have any real in-depth questions, go to the Internet instead. There’s a guy on YouTube called Mr. Lund who is fantastic. There are websites that are fantastic. This book is not bad, but that’s about the best I can say about it. It gives you the most basic information, but leaves a lot unsaid. You will have questions, because your caterpillars will do things that you may not expect them to do, and this book will not provide a lot of the answers.

This book went on its own migration
I like the book. It has a wealth of information and great photography. I will enjoy sharing ut with my granddaughter. The delivery was another matter. Tracking the delivery it seemed travel all around the country in 10 days, even reaching Burnaby, BC before finally arriving in Montreal. I guess it decided to make its own long migration.

Very informative and fun to read with the family!
Even after hours of online research, this book is by far the most important thing to have when rearing butterflies. We have planted swamp milkweed and purchased a butterfly habitat but this was the most important piece we needed to successfully care for and release minarch butterflies.Very informative and fun to read with the family!

How to raise Monarch butterflies
I thought it was a very helpful little guide. If I could only find some milkweed to bring home and plant in a pot, I'd really try to raise the butterflies. But I'm in a condo with no garden spot, so not quite sure where to get some.

Perfect for children and adults who wish to raise Monarch Butterflies!
I bought this for my grandson after listening to a guest speaker tell how she used the book as a guide to raising Monarch Butterflies with her grandchildren. Beautiful photos and steps and suggestions for raising Monarch Butterflies at home. Perfect for my environmentally conscious grandson and his parents who have chosen natural gardening.

You should buy this book if you want to save monarchs!
Such a great little book! meant for kids, but it really illustrates how to raise monarchs. Since the survival rate of monarchs left to fend for themselves in the wild is very low, I found this book helpful in learning how to bring the caterpillars inside and helping them grow to maturity.
