Tom Selleck stars as Nick Lassiter - a suave, debonair, man-about-town and thief. An Interesting Caper
I don't remember where I first saw 'Lassiter', but I almost always see a movie on TV or at the theater before I buy a copy for my personal library. I'm glad to see this finally out on DVD - and with subtitles for the hearing impaired. The storyline might seem a little corny - blackmailing a known cat burglar to steal diamonds from a foreign embassy to disrupt Nazi operations in South America. But when you consider that during World War II British Intelligence actually dressed a dead body as a British officer and floated it onshore in Spain with phony letters suggesting the Allied invasion of southern Europe would be through Greece (instead of Sicily), and it worked . . . well, who knows. (It was known as operation Mincemeat.) What I liked about this movie was the set designs. They were so 1930s! Set designers don't get the credit they should. I particularly like the scenes at the nightclubs and on the train. And they had the cars right, also. Good set designs add a lot to any movie. The chemistry between Tom Selleck and Jane Seymour was good. And Bob Hoskins was great as the 'copper'. If there was a disappointment in the acting, it was Joe Regalbuto as the FBI agent. He came across as a wimp, and FBI agents just are not timid. But I would be remiss if I did not give credit to Lauren Hutton, who played a Nazi courier with a wild side. So when you put the acting and set designs together with the plot, you come up with a movie that's pretty entertaining. Enjoy.

Lassiter is one of my all-time favorite movies. I love films about cat burglars. 'To Catch a Thief' ... 'The Pink Panther' ... ETC, ETC. And this movie, while not exactly a classic, still delivers that notorious Jewel Thief feel and excitement that captures the 1930s London era so well. Oh yeah and it features a nude Jane Seymour in all her early-twenties glory. Enough said. The DVD quality is okay. I have no complaints. The sound is a little uneven at times but in no way lessens the overall decent quality of the disc. Lassiter is a cool, underrated 80s movie with great actors (Lauren Hutton, Bob Hoskins), great locations, and Tom Selleck at his thieving best. I am so happy that this film was finally released on DVD. Awesome!

A bit more “R” than I remembered
Bought it for someone and watched it with them. They pointed out that some of the camera work and a few scenes seemed “off”. They researched on the fly and discovered it was the directors first movie. There is nudity. But some of it seems less about plot than just the desire to have nudity in the movie. I actually like the plot of the movie. The movie needed a different director.

I am a long time Selleck fan and this film was a bit out of the ordinary for him. He did an excellent job and it was a clever story of plot and counter plot, with the good guy triumphing in the end. Wholly enjoyable. Jane Seymore also did an excellent job. Good pairing as stars. The British heavy is absolutely despicable and a wonderful character actor. He is so delightfully evil. Hoskins??

Nous sommes en juin 39 et Nick Lassiter (Tom Selleck), gentleman cambrioleur américain en "représentations" à Londres est prié par les autorités d'aller faire un tour dans l'ambassade d'Allemagne pour y dérober des bijoux devant servir à alimenter un réseau d'espionnage. Lassiter n'a pas vraiment le choix, c'est soit l'ambassade, soit la prison. Pour notre plaisir ce sera l'ambassade. Certes il ne s'agit pas d'un grand film. La restauration de la copie est certes aussi aux abonnés absents mais on y passe en un délicieux moment, ce qu'on appelle un spectacle familial avec ce qu'il faut d'humour et d'action. Les acteurs, Tom Selleck, Jane Seymour, Lauren Hutton, Bob Hoskins, font le métier. C'est carré et professionnel. Le film étant invisible depuis fort longtemps, c'est pour un prix modique une occasion à ne pas rater.
