With every character on HBO's Boardwalk Empire leading a double life, season two is about making changes or facing the consequences. The stylish series also digs deeper into the futility of Prohibition, much as The Wire tackled the War on Drugs. The central figure, Atlantic City treasurer Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi), aims to please all of his constituents, but loses several powerful supporters after bootlegger Chalky White (Michael Kenneth Williams) kills a Klansman. Estranged from his brother, Eli (Shea Whigham), and former assistant, Jimmy (Michael Pitt), Nucky and his common-law wife (Kelly Macdonald) become more of a team. If domesticity suits Nucky, FBI agent Van Alden (Michael Shannon) looks askance at drinkers and nonbelievers, even as he holes up with Nucky's pregnant ex-girlfriend (Paz de la Huerta, the weakest link in an otherwise strong cast), while his wife remains in the Midwest. With enemies like the Commodore (Dabney Coleman) trying to remove him from office, Nucky hires Irish Lothario Slater (Charlie Cox), who helps to keep the booze flowing, meting out the occasional head-butt as necessary. Other new arrivals include a brutal butcher (William Forsythe) and a persistent federal prosecutor (Julianne Nicholson), who wields more power than the other wives and girlfriends combined, though Jimmy's mother (Gretchen Mol) becomes more Machiavellian by the minute. Nucky also joins forces with Arnold Rothstein (Michael Stuhlbarg), while Jimmy aligns with Al Capone (Stephen Graham) and Lucky Luciano (Vincent Piazza). Of course, it wouldn't be a gangster epic without casualties, and several men give in to their darker impulses, resulting in some spectacularly bloody business--including the murder of a major character. Also, heroin enters the picture towards the end of the 12-episode arc and seems likely to play a bigger, more destructive role in the next season. --Kathleen C. Fennessy Atlantic City, 1921. In a city whose fortunes have soared in the wake of Prohibition, Nucky Thompson is paying a steep price for wielding ultimate power in “the world’s playground.” Though the 1920 election is over, Nucky finds himself the target of a federal investigation for vote tampering – and an insurrection by those he counted among his closest allies. Steve Buscemi stars in the hit drama series that charts the continued rise of organized crime at the dawn of the Prohibition. Review: Another great season with truly talented actors - The main actor in the series delivers another amazing performance as the man who basically controls all the business. The twist turns and typical who going to win in the end of the season guys you are rooting for or the bad guys who you love to watch and yet hate at the same time. Never spoil the show by saying what happens just know you're in for a wild ride that never saw coming mind-blowing season. Buy this now and see why I said that last line. Review: Fabulous Entertainment: One of the Best Shows on Television - Without experiencing Boardwalk Empire, one might think this is just another "gangster flick." But nothing could be further from the truth. The artistry of the cast, director, set designers, writers, sound engineers, etc., bring the early decades of the 20th Century in America to vivid life. Characters are fully imagined; we come to understand the light and the dark forces that move each of them. The plight of women trying to maintain dignity and a sense of self in a world ruled by men is brilliantly explored from several different angles. There is brutality, because this is a story about ruthlessness. And there are stunning expositions of racial and cultural divisions. There are soldiers wounded from the first World War, who are so damaged that their only career in civilian life is creating death. Hide your eyes, if the violence is too much, but watch this series. Boardwalk Empire is unforgettable.

WOW!
So, I pre-ordered this, with the rest of my TV, months ago. No clue that this was going to be as big a set as this was. The series and season are good, they're excellent, but I'll let others describe those. Me? I'm going to focus on the actual product here instead. This box comes with 3 Blu-Ray discs, packaged by themselves. At the price paid for it, you'd think that would be all you get, considering it's a pretty standard price. HBO goes the extra mile though, by far. This set ALSO comes with (separately packaged) 2 double sided DVD's with all 12 episodes.. But wait, THERE'S MORE!!! HBO also throws in one code that allows you to download ALL episodes, PLUS 3 special features, ALL in HD off of iTunes. I've got, in my collection, probably 30, 40 television shows, most with multiple seasons. NONE of them have given out this much for this little. I think the closest I've seen was Chuck and Grimm with Ultraviolet digital copies (which aren't horrible, but they're not iTunes), nothing at all with the amount of 'extra' release content we have here. EXCELLENT job, HBO. Keep up the great work!!!

An Excellent Follow-Up to Season One
In this second season, we see lots of changes in the characters and their storylines. Several cross paths including Nucky and Nelson Van Alden but never in ways you would suspect. The season starts with Jimmy, The Commodore and Eli plotting against Nucky. We get a good glimpse of the history between Jimmy and Jillian as well as his relationship with Angela. The plot against Nucky proves a fiendish one, but certain ties just won't snap. Despite being a gangster now, Nucky's earlier kinder sides help save his skin a time or two. Also more fully developed are Micky Doyle(best laugh ever), Nelson Van Alden, Al Capone, Charlie "Lucky" Luciano, Myer Lansky and Margaret Shroder. If you liked season one, you should definitely enjoy this one. I know that I recognized the characters better this time out. Had a little trouble early on with the huge number of characters.

Another good season
It is a good follow up to the first season. Again I find it slow at times, so it is not perfect.

~ If you loved Sopranos . . . . need I say more ???
~ If you loved Sopranos . . . . need I say more ??? This is the beginning of the 1900's. Where families were looking to the new world and turf wars were just starting out. Anyone who is anybody from the old countries came here and started anew. If you love history with gangstars, Prohibition, Al Capone, Chicago, New York, Boston, New Jersey, the Italians, Irish, Jews, Blacks, Scotts, Hungarians and so on and so on. This is what your looking for. This is the second season for Boardwalk Empire. Where The Boardwalk Empire is an American cinematic television series from cable network HBO, set in Atlantic City, New Jersey during the Prohibition era. It stars Steve Buscemi as Nucky Thompson. The show was adapted by Emmy Award-winning screenwriter and producer Terence Winter (of The Sopranos) from a book about historical criminal kingpin Enoch L. Johnson by Nelson Johnson, titled Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City.Boardwalk Empire is a period drama focusing on Enoch "Nucky" Thompson (based on the historical Enoch L. Johnson), a political figure who rose to prominence and controlled Atlantic City, New Jersey, during the Prohibition period of the 1920s and 1930s. Nucky interacts with several historical figures in both his personal and political life, including mobsters, politicians, government agents, and the common folk who look up to him. The federal government also takes an interest in the bootlegging and other illegal activities in the area, sending agents to investigate possible mob connections but also looking at Nucky's lifestyle--expensive and lavish for a county political figure. The second season begins in January 1921. Jimmy, Eli, and the Commodore move along with their plot to remove Nucky from power. Nucky has suspected a plot, especially after a Ku Klux Klan attack on Chalky White's warehouse and Jimmy's increasingly distant attitude. The Commodore's faction decides to frame Nucky for election fraud, vengeance for the Commodore's own imprisonment for similar charges.

Spectacular show! (Sort of SPOILER)
This show is one of the best on television. It provides a very unique setting that is lacking in other shows. What is so amazing about it though, is its level of authenticity. That, combined with the amazing cast and engaging writing. I really loved it. I thought the second season was even better than the first. Best of all was the (SPOILER ALERT!! STOP NOW if you dont want it given away) ending. I can't speak for everyone, but as much as it should have been expected, I failed to expect it. There is usually this veil of protection put around major characters, and you come to realize that it just isnt the case here. Of course, it made season three all the better, not knowing how far they were willing to take it.

Season 2 a must-have
OK, "Boardwalk Empire" isn't precise history. It's heavily-fictionalized, but it's compelling TV. My interest was spurred by Judge Johnson's book. Living in southern N.J., it's an essential text for understanding local history. The TV show uses that as a starting point for drama. You don't watch it to learn history. This is well-crafted video that keeps you watching because you don't know what's coming next. It captures the era in many ways...politics, culture, mindset. The decor and the props are faithful, too. Stories I like tend to get watched again and again. So this was a must-own for me. Honestly, your "new" price beat what I've seen for used sets elsewhere (it was a special deal).
