Complete, Replete and Unabridged.
I am holding this book in my hand right now and the description of the book here on Amazon is incorrect. Indeed this book is so much more that what seems to be offed. The book is a special edition, published by Quality Paper Backs and it has at least 1,060 pages. Each story begins with page 1. So there are 4 stories in here all beginning with page 1 and ending on there designated end page, ie, page 326, ect. adding those all up I came to 1,059. Then there is at least another 50 pages of preface, forward, notes. glossay, appendices, bibliography and index's.I will take some photos and post them when I have time but for now the book is 4 complete and unabridged stories with an original preface and prologue by the author written just for this edition, along with the originals prefaces and prologues. The confusion as to the compilation of this book may be explained by the author in the Preface to the 1990 edition: "Awakenings has been through several editions and formats since its original appearance in 1973. There have, been over the years, all sorts of additions, subtractions, revisions, and other changes which have sometimes been confusing to bibliographers and readers. The brief publishing history which follows may also help to trace the evolution of the present edition". I can't rewrite the entire history here, but I can tell you this book is complete and unabridged and I believe it contains all the previous editions plus this new one. I will say it is replete and a treasure of Oliver Sacks' work. For the preface to this edition Oliver Sacks wrote: " I am happy that four of my books are being brought together in this special edition, because although they are so different, they form a sort of series, or evolution, in a way...This sense of Identity as all-important, as the first and most necessary object of the physician's respect and his cherishing, runs through all four of these books, uniting them, dispute their different themes and approaches". Hopefully the authors approval of the edition and statement at to the authenticity of the text is enough to convince you this is a stunning book, unlike any other I have seen and I have been reading for over 30 years. Buy it! You won't be disappointed.
