Solidly built extender that works as it should.
Solid and well built. Does what it does and does it well. The tripod mount is a necessity when using longer lenses with the Q since you don't want that amount of weight on the mount. The 5.6x effective "magnification" (not really magnification - the sensor is area is just smaller) really makes quite normal lenses into very long lenses. But don't be fooled - even a good lens is probably not going to resolve at that effective magnification (the lens will limit you). For example, I did some moon shots with my D90 and a 300mm lens and they were sharper than the Q and a 210mm zoom (~1176mm on the Q). While it was still pretty impressive what the Q did (all things considered), the 300mm on the D90 was much better and resolved better detail than the 70-210 combo on the Q. The D90 shot was handheld with optical stabilization, while the Q was on a tripod. Admittedly though, there is some camera shake too because I didn't have a remote shutter release. So if you have old fd lenses and want to have some fun with them, then give this a try. Just don't expect optical perfection. Also note that infinity on the zoom is not quite infinity on the Q with the extender, so finding the focus can be tricky. The Q has a zoom to assist focusing in manual mode, and that is great for some things, but this live-view style manual focusing can be unforgiving (things that are dim or too bright will be impossible to focus without trial and error). For example, the moon saturates the live-view, so you have to hunt and guess. So don't expect a super zoom for action shots!
