Why does the display only say eeeee?

It means that the controller is not able to read temperature and so cannot control. You will need to connect a thermocouple to inputs 6 (-) and 7 (+). Make sure you set the correct sensor type (see Table 1 in the instructions) that corresponds to the type of thermocouple you are using. The most common types are K, J or T.
